It's a cycle of 'opulence' that has repeated itself many times in history in a variety of cultures. Big cars, big cigars, flashy (now literally) stuff. Read Veblen about "Conspicuous Consumption" in his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class” published in 1899. The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display wealth and income rather than to cover the real, the functional needs of the consumer.
