As I get an ACPI error when trying to shut down, I chose restart and stop it after Linux has shut down, but before the boot screen appears again (I'ts a BIOS controlled Power down, unlike the ones of old...)
as a result of this, first attempt to boot after doing the above, I get a kernel panic and my intel8x0 drivers cause it. I reset and try again, success every time.
Also does the following fix the power down Problem (submitted by Basil Chupin):
