I would also do a dd. But I am thinking of a user who is not comfortable with such a thing. Of course, if they can't grok dd, then perhaps they should not be having any confidence in some friendly GUI app. That is part of my asking: what tools are reliable and, I now add, novice friendly?

My 2 cents says when push comes to shove you would want bare bones
commands and no YSOA (Yet Some Other App) to do the honors.
dd, hands-on and hands down.
yes, fstab & grubwork 4 sure.
