I'm really surprised that no one has suggested Nvidia's riva/tnt chipset. As far as I know it is now the only card with open source 3D drivers. my $.02
Well, I hadn't said anything yet... That's why no one mentioned them. NVidia cards are nice, I'm using an STB Velocity128 AGP (Riva128, slightly older card, but it does the trick). XWin worked great with it long before the drivers were released, and is cranking away. 3Dfx cards have 3D drivers for linux (voodoo chips, et al), but I don't know about how open their source is, and besides, the NVidia chips are faster.
