I would really hope that the HP1020 driver will be included in the 10.1 and following editions of SuSE Linux. Also the driver for Broadcom NetXtreme NIC.

Will HP or Broadcom have their respective OSS/GNU/Linux drivers released prior to the release of SUSE Linux 10.1 and following editions? Last I knew, SUSE did not make the hardware mentioned nor were they hired to create and maintain the drivers for this hardware.
Very likely not, but most of the other drivers we have have been reverse-engineered, why shouldn't these be?
Have you contacted either HP or Broadcom about making OSS/GNU/Linux drivers for these devices and making them available to OSS/GNU/Linux in general? _IF_ these manufacturers provide OSS/GNU/Linux drivers, then SUSE and all the other OSS/GNU/Linux projects and distributions could possibly provide them.
I have contacted Broadcom, and they are thinking about Linux drivers. But they refuse to deal with end-users. They just sell to board manufacturers, who probably don't care. I haven't contacted HP. They claim to support Linux. I will bug them, much good it will probably do.
Please contribute to OSS/GNU/Linux software by at least buying known supported hardware, and failing that, apply pressure where it needs to be brought to bear: hardware manufacturers that aren't OSS/GNU/OSS compatible.
/snip/ It's hard to know what's "known supported." I asked on this list, before I bought the ASUS mobo, and ASUS was recommended. Maybe they used a different network chip at the time, and I got caught in a change-over, I don't know. But I'm virtually certain that a previous version of SuSE ran on this network interface, and that 10.0 invalidated it. That really sucks! I expected that all HP printers would use Post-Script. It was a nasty surprise to find that this 1020 didn't. The temptation to buy a laser printer for under $200, compared to the $500 and up level I had paid in the past, led me to just get the 1020. The info from the list, printed out earlier today, to get the 1020 to work, didn't pan out--I got an error message, and I have a query into Johannes Meixner, from SuSE, Germany, who wrote it, as to what to do to solve the problem. If I get it all to work, I will follow up to the list. As an aside, what is the relationship between SuSE, Germany, and Novell? --doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
