I'm new to Linux, and I've been struggling with this a few days but run out of ideas on this one. I hate to tire what seems like an old subject, but I'm stuck.
I'm trying to test my modem using minicom. However, when I open, I get the "Initializing Modem" dialog, but then I end up with a dead terminal. The cursor is in the middle of the screen but will not respond. The online/offline status in the lower right keeps alternating. Turning ECHO on in minicom allows me to see my commands, but they still are not sent to the modem.
I test a modem by sending it an ATZ, and see if it returns OK.
I've tried /dev/ttyS1 /dev/cua1 and /dev/modem for device settings in minicom as well as a number of various INIT strings based on the modem manual (Hardware flow control is always on). My serial ports are connected right off of the motherboard (DELL Pentium 133). Would this be a PnP issue even with an external modem?
I doubt it is a pnp problem with an external. Do you have a dual boot with windows, and does it work under windows? Can you try a different cable? Can you use a meter to check the output voltage of the modem power supply? It is also possible when you were switching between /dev/ttyS1, /dev/cua1 etc. that you didn't get a proper resetting of the modem. Another thing is an irq conflict with another isa card. Try removing all other isa cards. Is your serial mouse working OK? Also are you certain that you have the bios settings right? Also, there is a little cable that connects the external com port to the motherboard. Is it on correctly? The little white dot should line up with the number 1, or the red edge of the connector cable. They sometimes get pulled off when you play around with memory or other cables. Do you have any old "setserial" commands in boot.local that may be redefining the port? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
