I think I found it.
In display settings, formatting, advanced, some posts are covered by "Latin" charset. But most fonts are covered by "Other writing systems". I have now selected for both dejavu fonts.
The default is a no name font with the name "monospace", very thin even when forced to be big with the "ctrl +" key combo. Another setting that affects them is the "minimum font size" which by default is "none".
Now they are not perfect, but easier to read than they were.
