You can put "rtc.startConnected = FALSE" in the .cfg file as well.  I finally had to ask Vmware support to get this parameter.  Couldn't find it anywhere on their web site.

As you can tell from my signature below, I am using vmware 2.0.3.  Works great.

1.      I solved the RTC thingy by compiling rtc into the kernel;  I don't remember
where it is in make xconfig, but it is there.

2.      I have used vmware for quite a while, never had a problem. 

When vmware-config.pl asks for locations of compilers, are you sure they are
there?

When it warns about local use of ip addresses, did you check the file it
mentions in the warning?
