I found similar problem and solved it by installing java-1_6_0-sun package instead of the default openSUSE 11.2, java-1_6_0-openjdk package. It seems that java-1_6_0-openjdk package doesn't correctly contains gcjwebplugin.so. The old package for openSUSE 11.0 has the plugin on it's package.
off-topic, You may also hit similar error message while running Firefox on terminal.
