On my machine, the icons on the desktop are not changed until I logout and login again. (Refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I don't think so. Try the "Edit File Type..." method, which makes sure that you edit the correct association. Then check out some pdf-files with Konq, that should show the new icons instantly (after pressing F5 at least).
