I'd second what Tejas says. Changing the font and icon sizes is the best way to go if possible, since changing the DPI means that setting the magnification to 100% in programs like gimp or acroread no longer works properly. Also the DPI is sometimes set automatically with modern LCD displays, I believe (via the EDID).
