I have to side with Anton, there is no absolute need. If your system is running out of memory, buy more memory, not swap space.

If you are memory-constrained and dependent on swap, then using an SSD for swap will no doubt help. That is the only situation, otherwise it is not necessary.
Which is the case. I recognize the symptoms James sees because I saw them in my machine. He has 16 GiB, but 8 of them are tied with Virtualbox. So he has 8, same as me. Three browsers and Thunderbird? Machine trashes. Yet he sees free ram, but this is not what it seems because "swap off" fails because there is not enough ram. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
