Thanks to you and Brian Clark for suggesting postfix, it does not seg fault. The rpm off the 7.2 install cd did however install with the wrong permissions on the maildrop directory which dropped a line in /var/log/mail but hung apache+php which was waiting for a response. For some reason just having php try to use the /usr/lib/sendmail that postfix placed causes the below garbage, anyone know the correct php sendmail path, an extensive google - postfix website search has turned up nothing.
