I've never had had that much trouble with SCSI, but one time I was installing a system in the south of France. It just wasn't reliable.
The solution: go outside and drive a 20-foot stake in the ground, then connect the building ground to it.
---edit--- The solution: go outside and 'place your computer on the ground, place a 20-foot stake on the mid-point of your case laid horizontally and drive the 20-foot stake into the ground'. ------- On a more serious note, I would look to turn any logging or debug associated with any of the tape applications you are using (if it is just tar, you can look at some of the --ignore-command-error or --format options) There is some bit that is being set wrong somewhere, whether it is a result of a drive failure, format problem or what, I'm out of guesses :( -- David C.
