Please set this in your ~/.bashrc export DISPLAY="${DISPLAY:-:0}" This is a important setting.
Hi Masaru Nomiya, just got the laptop back to try out your
incantation, sorry for the delay. Actually that made things worse,
after putting it in my .bashrc file (at the end) I could no longer
bring up either the Wayland nor the X11 desktop. After entering my
login credentials both desktops simply keep returning to the login
screen and prompting me to again put in my login credentials.
I had to login as root, using Wayland to change my .bashrc file back, and even there I encountered difficulties using editors like emacs, xemacs, kate etc. Anything that tried to launch a new window failed. So I resorted to using ed, probably could have used vi if I knew how to but my fingers are trained on emacs.
