When we are faced with that with NFS there is a mapping tool. What is basically does is numberX on the specific NFS mount corresponds to numberY here.
These days that exists, and is almost usable. It didn't always exist, and it was a huge nightmare to always assign and maintain universal UIDs across a large network.
