I don't know what "nomodeset" is supposed to do, but my nVidia driver
loads and works fine with or without it. However, I need to
give "vmalloc=192M" to make it possible for the X server to start.
Without it there's a chance it will start, but a slim one, and when it
does there are frequent debilitating pauses when nothing at all happens
in user-level code and the kernel soaks up all the CPU and inhibits all
other execution (apparently).
