Don't get confused here. "Accelerated X" is the brand name of the commercial X-Servers from Xi Graphics (formerly know as X Inside), which do also support ATI cards. Most modern ATI Cards are also supported by the Mach64 X-Server from XFree86 (Package xmach64), which also utilizes some 2D accelerator functions of the respective chipset. With XFree86, try using the SVGA X-server with Chipset "ati". I understand that the SVGA server is where most of the current ati support work is going on... All card related info is automatically discovered (RAMDAC et al).
