Ted,
I use vim 4.6 from the SuSE 5.1 cd, compiled from the sources to include
gui-vim and such. This does not show the behavior you describe.
I have tried to compile the new 5.0 alpha (with code colour=20
highlighting) on SuSE without much luck, though I haven't tried very
hard.
