I tend to use two graphical dialing programs instead of scripts here.
They include xisp and ezppp. I compiled xisp on my SuSE 5.0 distribution
and had a pretty easy time of it. ezppp works from the binary
distribution. People have reported some problems with dropping the pppd;
but I have some minor fixes that seem to help me at least. There are
sample scripts also.
