The fact that there are at least 3 main and several other spin-off Linux
distributions is very healthy.
1. It encourages friendley competition to make your next distribution that
bit better than the other guys. This leapfrogging has made the usability
of Linux for non Unix gurus improve out of all recognition in the past 3
years.
2. It shows people that Linux is different in that the development model
does encourage genuine choice.. I think it is great that Linux has two
great (and affordable) Office Suites, not to mention the big choice of
databases and the mountain of other stuff.
What a contrast to the Windows world were everything is distorted towards
MS Office. Yes there are shelves full of other products for Windows, but
that will come for Linux. The fact that by some measures we are more
numerous than Mac users now should not be lost on the big commercial
software vendors forever.
I am happy that there is a choice of distributions and want it to
continue. That is why I sell both Caldera OpenLinux and Suse, they are
both great products but each has different strengths so you would be
poorer if you had to make an arbitrary choice between them.
