Set-up sound with menuconfig first then use xconfig if you need to. In
menuconfig there is an option for "old style" setup or something similar
or along those lines, say yes and jump through the rest of the hoops,
save and exit, you'll be asked if you want to save. Then you can use
xconfig for the rest and to double check your sound setup.
