I've had similar problems with both RedHat and SuSE.  Part of the problem
is speed of the uart chip in my com port and there isn't much I can do=20
about it (I have a 486/25mhz machine.  I need a new computer).

The thing that helped me the most is to install and configure setserial. =20
Things will be much better then.
