Leap 15.4 Darktable doesn't start

Hi, Updated from Leap 15.3 to Leap 15.4 today. No problems so far, except(!) Darktable doesn't work anymore. I have been using Darktable 3.8 with Leap 15.3. After the upgrade there was Darktable 3.6, which is standard in leap 15.4. Neither Darktable icon nor console as user could start the program. console printed: peter@lux-2:~> darktable darktable: error while loading shared libraries: libdarktable.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Something is missing. SAMBA open is very slow

I have a 15.3 system that uses SAMBA to share file systems between a couple systems. I have used that in 15.1 and it has worked very well. On 15.3 clients, I see that file open calls can be extremely slow, like taking a minute to complete. Later access is ok. It is the open that takes so long. Or so it appears. I have not changed the share or mount options from 15.1 when it was working okay. The systems were upgraded recently via zypper dup, so I expect that my original settings are the same. I see that it is the open call via strace on the programs that are accessing the files. They are doing a simple open() call. Nothing specific to SAMBA. Just a simple open. I'm not sure where to look. Google didn't provide much help. Maybe my search keys were bad. Anyone see this behavior on openSUSE? I'm running the default (I hope): 4.13.4+git -- Roger Oberholtzer

15.4 - When I switch drives, what is rewriting the grub menu? os-prober? How to turn it off? (remove it?)

All, One annoying quirk of 15.4 is it rewrites the grub boot menu when I change drives. I don't want it to do that. I just stuck the windows drive in, and it wiped out the 15.0 chainload and boot. How do I stop this from happening? Remove os-prober (if that is what is doing it?) Or does 15.4 use something else to rewrite the grub menu when disks change? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Network Manager

I tried to install the Network Manager in the following way: Yast > System > Network Settings > Global Options > Network Setup Method > ( Wicked Service | Network Manager | Network Services Disabled ) After selecting "Network Manager" and clicking "ok", the following warning message appeared in a small pop-up window: Applet needed NetworkManager is controlled by desktop applet (KDE plasma widget and nm-applet for GNOME). Be sure it's running and if not, start it manually. How and where can I get the KDE plasma widget mentioned in the previous message and how do I install and start it? How do I program the Network Manager? Thanks in advance for your help? Wolfgang

Change install method

For years, I have been copying the full ISO to a USB stick for installation. I just realized I should now be using the NET install image, because my Internet speed is faster than USB 2! Until a couple of years ago, my download bandwidth was 75 Mb or less. It's now officially 500 Mb, but actually around 900 Mb. USB 2 tops out 480, assuming appropriate hardware.

Zypper DL hang

It often happens that some package download hangs at some % which forces the user into retry/abort/ignore. Sometimes the same file(s) will hang for a day or two, or weeks. Why do they make the list at all if they don't download proper? Retry seldom fixes the problem, aborting was not the purpose behind launching zypper, and ignore just skips the download. Then comes the misleading message "Installation has completed with error" which SHOULD be "Installation aborted due to incomplete download". Maybe the options should include "abort, skip, redo-depends and keep truckin'"? Right now it's these 2: @ 64%: libx264-161-32bit-0.161+git20200912.d198931a-2.34.x86_64.rpm @ 65%: transcode-1.1.7-11.46.x86_64.rpm

External hard drive failing?

I have a Verbatim external USB 3.0 hard drive. For the second time in a month, my laptop running Leap 15.3, fails to recognize when it's plugged in. The light on the drive lights up when it's plugged in, sothe drive recognizes the laptop. The laptop is a Lenovo T520. The ports are USB 2.0. Rebooting the laptop does not help. Shutting the laptop for an hour does help. Any of this sound familiar? Is USB port failing? Probably not, same thing happens regardless of which port the hard drive is plugged into. Hard drive failing or something in the kernel messing up? TIA, Jeffrey
