I have received a number of messages from various sources with a video attached, but across the face of what must be the first screen, is the message, "This video cannot be played." I'm curious--what kind of video is being sent that cannot be player, and why? --doug

[opensuse] Memtest & UEFI

OS install on USB-C disk on a laptop

Hello!, I have a work machine I cannot reinstall (comes with Windows), Latitude 5420. Given it has only one M2 slot, I'm exploring using a Sabrent nano USB-C external disk to run opensuse from it, but I'm wondering if it will work properly in a laptop scenario (suspend/resume). Can anybody share their experience with similar setups?. Regards, Cyrus.-

SuSE Tumbleweed with newest updates and upgrades. 5.7.1-1-default #1 SMP Wed Jun 10 11:53:46 UTC 2020 (6a549f6) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Just recently started to give error messages when plugging in e.g. USB Headsets, Arduino Uno into some Exsys USB 3.0 hub. This was working fine in Tumbleweed before and in e.g. SuSE 13.1. The error message is e.g.: [...]usb 2-1.4.3: new full-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd [...]usb 2-1.4.3: New USB device found, idVendor=2341, idProduct=0043, bcdDevice= 0.01 [...]usb 2-1.4.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=220 [...]usb 2-1.4.3: Manufacturer: Arduino (www.arduino.cc) ...serialnumber... [...]kernel: usb 2-1.4.3: Not enough bandwidth for new device state. [...]kernel: usb 2-1.4.3: can't set config #1, error -28 This error message started on Jun 04, after making an update (zypper up) on June 3rd. A USB3.0 stick is working on the Exsys Hub. The Arduino is working on some other USB 3.0 Port of another hub. Regression? Any hints how to get this away? Audio problem Leap-15.3

How to connect via WiFi

My new computer is an HP 15s-eq2147 FHD RYZ5-5 16GB 512 SSD DOS It has no cable connection to the internet, but only access via WiFi. Installing Leap 15.3 was no problem, but so far I did not manage to establish a WiFi connection. Using Yast, I set up a wicked service with fixed address, getting this list: Device Name: wlan0 Configured with address 192.168.2.16/24 (acer.ariannuccia.zz) Starting automatically on cable connection I find it somewhat absurd that a cable connection is required even for WiFi. Since I have no cable connection, I am looking for a work around. Any idea? The "Authentication Mode" offers these 5 options: No Encryption WEP - Open WEP - Shared Key WPA-EAP ("enterprise") WPA-PSK ("home") On my router (192.168.2.1) there are these "Encryption type": Unencrypted (not recommended) WPA2 (very secure) WPA / WPA2 (secure) WPA (secure) For avoiding problems with the correspondence of these methods, I have selected "No Encryption" on my computer and "Unencrypted (not recommended)" on my router. But the connection does not work. Any attempt to ping the router from the new computer is rejected with the reply: connect: Network is unreachable Any help would be welcome. no more usb keyboard and mouse

Hello, since the very last update with "zypper up --recommand", my openSUSE Leap 15.3 do not anymore accept external keyboard or mouse. however, booting windows 10 (!!!), and rebooting immediately (no need to login) restore the mouse/keyboard usual working the usb keyboard works as expected in grub menu booting the previous snapshot do not makes any better this was since 48 hours and right now still no new update may I fill a bug report? thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org http://valeriedodin.com

file manager used to save in chrome

In the latest update in 15.2, something changed in the way I save files downloaded from the internet when in Chrome, or a Chrome based browser like Brave. It used to use Dolphin file manager, and that is much more convenient, because it requires less clicks to change the file name. Now it switched to the file manager that Gnome uses - I guess its Nautilus. I don't use Gnome very much, but I have it installed and sometimes go into it if there is something I need it for, so I have to keep the gnome base packages on my system. I get (hand copied): error: bad shim signature. error: you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue. Details: It is a new external hard disk, via USB3 (tried also USB2) on a laptop that has internally Leap 15.2 and Windows, both booting normally. On this external hard disk I installed 15.3 (UEFI mode). The UEFI boot menu does not display this disk at all. The efibootmgr man page doesn't say how to add a new entry: CREATING A NEW BOOT OPTION An OS installer would call efibootmgr -c. This assumes that /boot/efi is your EFI System Partition, and is mounted at /dev/sda1. This creates a new boot option, called "Linux", and puts it at the top of the boot order list. Options may be passed to modify the default behavior. The default OS Loader is elilo.efi. 3. What are those options to modify the behaviour??? It is an example section with no examples!!! So, instead I boot 15.2 (with current updates as of yesterday), start yast boot manager, and tell it to probe the disk for other systems. It does find 15.3, and the error I posted above is precissely what happens when using that probed entry. No matter if I select failsafe. smartctl

I have been beating my head against smartctl for over two hours now. I cannot seem to get the command "long" accepted, as the various tutorials explain. When I try to insert it, I get an error, like this: linux1:~ # smartctl long /dev/nvme0n1 smartctl 7.0 2019-05-21 r4917 [x86_64-linux-5.3.18-57-default] (SUSE RPM) Copyright (C) 2002-18, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org ERROR: smartctl takes ONE device name as the final command-line argument. You have provided 2 device names: long /dev/nvme0n1 (It doesn't like "short" either.) And my typing is getting worse! It doesn't help that my drive is called /dev/nvme0n1. As I mentioned earlier, the lightning strike has damaged something in this, my main computer, and I'm trying to find out what. For those who missed the earlier post, the only thing I can connect to here is the internet. I cannot see the printers or the laptop machine, and nmap basically doesn't work. I started this quest at 11:30 PM and it's now 3:30 AM. I'm going to bed! --doug
