[opensuse] lxcc won't start

As I mentioned in another thread, lxcc won't start after my upgrade to Leap 15. I see it has been discussed before here: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2018-03/msg00087.html I have the same error but the previous thread doesn't really help me. I don't understand much about themes & icons etc. I try to ignore that whole area as long as I have a display that works. David Haller suggested something to do with linking process-stop.svg and gtk-stop.svg. FWIW I have: /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/actions/process-stop.svg /usr/share/icons/HighContrast/scalable/actions/process-stop.svg /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/actions/gtk-stop.svg and according to lxappearance I am using a theme called Adwaita. If I switch to Tango then lxcc starts. I have no idea what other things changing my icon theme may do. [opensuse] Build Service Fails -- //blah/blah Device Full?

All, Last night I experienced 2 (temporary) build service failures after update of an editor package. Out of the targets 13.1 - Leap 15, all but 13.2 built, but strangely stayed in the "Finished" state for quite a while. Both architectures for 13.2 failed and the only log message was a one line log message saying: stuff //blah/blah Device Full (I wish I would have copied it, but distinctly recall the ".. URI Device Full" full part) Was there a huge demand last night or does that indicate some type of failure in the system? -- David C. [opensuse] ssh session, open specific software with screenoutput at host not at client

Hi, how to ssh to a host, client opens a shell (as normal), then inside this shell i like to start a program, but the complete output of this program should be at the hosts screen? i googled, but found nothing for this situation. try to do something like: simon@local:> ssh -X host simon@host:> konsole -e mc and the konsole+midnightcommaner should be opened at host screen (with host x11/hardware) not at the local machine. So another effect of my upgrade to Leap 15 was to upgrade FF from 52.8 to 60. It has made many sites more ugly, because they used to have a white background everywhere, but now have a light grey background mostly with patches of white at random. This is presumably something to do with default background colours, and I wouldn't be surprised if it indicates the website owners have got things slightly wrong, but as a poor user it's a major irritation. I tried to install 42.3 on a new disk and could my distribution medium says it cannot open http://dow3nloaqde.opensuse.org/leap/42.3/repo.oss. It therefore could not get any updates. [opensuse] BUG in Tramp: After sleep, saving file hangs

Here's the scenario: Both the local and the remote machines are running linux. The local machine is a laptop. The remote is headless and runs sshd. I often use tramp to work on files on the remote machine from the local machine. So I'll open a file on the remote machine with tramp, work on it for a time, then some time later put the local machine into sleep mode. Going into sleep mode obviously causes all internet connections to be lost, including all of those from the local machine to the remote machine. So, as is almost always the case, if I have a terminal window open from the local to the remote via ssh, it is lost when the local is put to sleep, and upon waking I must rerun "ssh remote-machine" to get it back. That's to be expected (at least until ssh becomes a lot more refined and sophisticated). Similarly, when I have a remote file open in tramp/emacs, put the local machine to sleep, bring it out of sleep, and then try to work on that remote file some more, then there is the problem. Specifically, I can edit the buffer, but when I try to save the buffer, emacs hangs, for minutes if I wait that long. I can always break that hang by doing "C-g". But then the file will not be saved. Sometimes if I try "C-x C-s" again, it will work, and the buffer will be saved, but not always. Sometimes it will take third or fourth attempt to save the remote buffer. But sometimes even that many repeated attempts all fail. Yesterday, after multiple such attempts to save, all not working, I identified the "ssh -e remote-machine" process which was the child process to emacs and killed it -- after doing that, I did "C-x C-s" in emacs and the remote file was successfully saved. Sometimes with such a hang emacs will display Debugger output, most of the time it doesn't. [opensuse] upgrade to Leap 15

I just upgrade my box from 42.3 to 15. Just one heart-stopping period. I used zypper dup and the good news is that it performed the upgrade apparently successfully and didn't complain about my reiserfs filesystems, which still work. The heart-stopping moment came when I rebooted. I saw the h/w start up, and then grub, and the opensuse stuff* and then it switched to X (or at least an X-style arrow mouse pointer appeared. But it then just sat there with a black screen. Initially it didn't seem I could do anything at all, but after rebooting again with nomodeset I was able to select text-mode tty2. After a lot of faffing around and getting frustrated I started yast in text mode and went to update-alternatives and switched from sddm to lightdm. After I rebooted, everything worked. I have no idea why sddm wasn't working, but then I have no idea why it chose sddm when I was previously using lightdm. * I also have no idea why the stuff I saw at bootup included plymouth, since it wasn't installed before the upgrade. I've deleted and tabooed it. One thing that wasted my time was that during the upgrade I was asked to approve a licence - something about nvidia video. Now my box doesn't have an nvidia hardware; it uses Intel 915 video. So one of the things I tried to fix my problem was to remove some packages with nvidia in their name, on the offchance it was a driver issue. But I couldn't remove them because of lots of dependencies. What's going on there? Why do I need a whole bunch of packages with nvidia in their names even with no nvidia hardware? And why do I have to agree some special licence? I wonder what other gotchas await? I had the following indication from Knurpth: Install postgresql 9.6 ( not 10, if that's installed use update-alternatives --config postgresql ) Stop akonadi, move ~/.local/share/akonadi so that you can go back Change ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc like this ============== [Debug] Tracer=null [%General] Driver=QPSQL [QPSQL] Host=/tmp/akonadi-YOURUSERNAME.SOMEHASH InitDbPath=/usr/bin/initdb Name=akonadi Options= ServerPath=/usr/bin/pg_ctl StartServer=true ============== Start akonadi and the database will be rebuilt. Took about 20 minutes for 7 IMAP, 1 POP account, total of ~150.000 emails. On Leap you may need some extra KDE Framework lib, but AFAIK that's no longer needed. My story: A few days ago we were greeted with a beeping ups when we awakened Determined finally that the power supply for my desktop (OS13.1) had failed and took the motherboard with it. Fortunately the hdd was ok. Being between paychecks and having already committed to a different project, repair or replace wasn't an option at this time so I cast a covetous look at the webserver which is running Ubuntu 16.04. Simple, right? Wrong. Apache will run on about any linux platform and Ubuntu is the newest thing I had on dvd at the time so that's why. HOWEVER, when I started trying to move my desktop operations over to it, I discovered what others may already know: Ubuntu 16.04 with its Unity desktop is a piece of sh_t. Software installation and changes? Forget the gui. Duckduckgo has been a real help. Today I have the final major piece of the desktop (thunderbird email) up and running so there is some degree of normalcy here again. I am anticipating the time when I have the funds to replace mobo + cpu + mem in my blown puter and drop OS15.1 in it. [opensuse] Help required to install Leap-15 on a machine with a nVidia / Intel setup

Hello I can not install Leap 15.0 (openSUSE-Leap-15.0-DVD-x86_64.iso downloaded today) on a friend's old Asus X53S laptop. This was a bit unexpected because the machine was running a dual boot setup Win7 / openSUSE-42.1 that I installed a few years ago. A sticker on the laptop sayes that it has a "GEFORCE GT540M CUDA 2GB" card. The installation of Leap 15.0 stops abruptly at boot menu right after I select "Leap 15.0" to initiate the installation : Loading initial kernel... Loading initial ramdisk... I tried hitting 'e' at the boot menu screen at the beginning of the Leap 15.0 installation and then scrolling down to the line that begins "linuxefi" and adding "nomodeset" at the end.. Existing line was : linuxefi /boot/x86_64/loader/linux splash=silent I added nomodeset like this : linuxefi /boot/x86_64/loader/linux splash=silent nomodeset After which I hit Ctrl + X or F10 to contine booting. This changed nothing. The installation of Leap 15.0 stops abruptly as before. I also had the same problem trying to install Leap-15.0 with the openSUSE-Leap-15.0-NET-x86_64.iso I downloaded TW (openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Current.iso) and it installed fine. :) The Asus X53S video details on TW setup follow : linux-ws6z:~ # lspci -nnk | grep -A3 VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. [opensuse] no way to get nvidia modules loaded?

I start a new thread to not mix up things. I have an Asus GL552V laptop, i7 6700, optimus graphics intel/nvidia running opensuse leap 42.3, KDE The nvidia drivers are installed, but they are not loaded. I have no idea why. I completely removed everything nvidia, disabling the opensuse.nvidia repository. Then booted in init 3 and installed those drivers again using yast. I hoped this fresh istall would make them appear loaded, but no. It is possible that due to the many things I tried to get this optimus stuff running again (it worked under 13.x using suse-prime) that there is some mess in the things installed or not installed. But I don't know what is needed and what not and where to begin to search.... By the way the is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file on my system and yast said something about that when installing the nvidia drivers. I have a xorg.conf.bak and a xorg.conf.install, furthermore a xorg.conf.nvidia-post and xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original. I copied xorg.conf.bak (and later xorg.conf.install) to xorg.conf, but with this I could not reach the graphical kde login anymore. So I deleted it again. An here I am. So, if you think there is any hope that I can use the nvidia card on this optimus laptop, please help! I guess the first thing is to have those nvidia drivers loaded. [opensuse] graphics problems with intel (single windows flickering) - still no solution for optimus?

Hello, I still suffer from my expensive useless laptop. Besides that the nvidia card is not running no way, even the intel graphics makes problems: sometimes (often!) one window or one message (like the alert when mails arrive) flickers. In text windows like this email or in kwrite or in console sometimes the text hops up and down some lines, sometimes freshly written text appears and disappears and the former text lines reformat. Sometimes a website in firefox (or any other browser) flickers, hops up and down for maybe 50 pixels, sometimes in digikam the album tree appears and disappears. It happens always just in one window, sometimes one in the background (so the visible part flickers), sometimes the active one. If text flickers (moves up and down etc.) sometimes I can solve it if I scroll a bit and it keeps quiet for a while... All /really/ annoying. So: still the question: is there any way to make the nvidia graphics run on Linux? and: how can I accomplish that at least the weak intel graphics do the normal work? I already accepted that on this laptop I cannot view high res videos, but at least that flickering should go away, somehow... This is opensuse 42.3, KDE on a Asus GL552V laptop, i7 6700, optimus graphics (intel graphics cannot be disabled in BIOS, I checked) Any new ideas more than welcome! So I just tried to build the current video4linux (266752) for opensuse Leap 42.3 and it fails. It starts by issuing a bunch of warnings and finally an error because openSUSE has backported a changed kernel API for get_user_pages that doesn't match its stated kernel version, which v4l uses to try to compile against a variety of kernels. Does anybody know what that is all about? What's the best/easiest way to stop a program accessing the net? I want to run a program (actually 'make') that may in turn run other programs and some of which might try to access the net. I'd like the access to be stopped and me given a meaningful error message (i.e. what part of what program tried to access what net resource). Ideally, I'd then have the choice of aborting or allowing it to continue. It is apparently needed to build kernel modules, but is not present on my system in /lib/modules/4.4.138-59-default/ I do have kernel-default-devel, kernel-devel, kernel-source and kernel-syms installed. Hello: I would like to configure two network printers in yast as LPD/LPR printers. One is a HP Laserjet, the other is an Epson all-in-one. The add LPD printer dialogue in the printer connections wizard insist that I enter a print queue name which I don't know. (Yast dialog says: "Queue Name (see the printer's manual) ) I also tried to add the printers in CUPS web configuration tool and it also expects that the queue added, like: Add Printer Connection: lpd Examples: lpd://hostname/queue or in the CUPS help pages (http://localhost:631/help/network.html) lpd://ip-address-or-hostname/queue What is the value of this queue? Where can I find it? If I understand correctly this is not the same as the "printer queue name" or printer name I specify when I set up the printer queue. I searched both printer's manuals for queue but could not find mentioning of queue in ip address. You are using gmail, so the first thing you must know is that you will never receive a copy of your own email via the list server, because gmail thinks it is a duplicate and erases it (it has the local copy of the "sent" folder). I have been searching trying to discover why so many of my 42.3 applications fail in leap 15. As a test I rebooted my system so things would be fresh, and then executed: pstree -p -n With Thunderbird, Firefox, Rhythmbox, fvwm2, a terminal an a few others, there were 438 different processes spawned. Just Firefox was responsible for 238 processes. Rhythmbox, one of my problem apps, had 10 processes. I would like to find documentation describing how one would write an application and all of the synchronization requirements linked by gdbus and the other protocols. I am currently rereading the systemd documentation which gives some of the desired information at startup. What I would like is a document that ended with a cookbook giving a full example of an application. For example a simple window with a push button in it. I am sure people do write code for opensuse, or else we wouldn't need such a software development environment. The only documentation I can find relates to setting up the environment and system management. Thanks, and it doesn't have to be free. I will buy a book if available. I have a Lenovo X201 with tpm. I have the system installed as follows: One hdd with a /dev/sda1 partition (unencrypted) and an LVM (with the /dev/ home, /dev/system, /dev/root, /dev/swap) as proposed by the partitioner at the time of fresh install of Leap 15. I tried however an update first with a 42.3 system and a /boot partition and the error I am describing here was the same in Leap 15. When starting up the system reaches correctly trusted grub2. You are asked to input the password. After having done the input, the system works for some time and then states: slot 0 opened (so this part works) Error: no symbol table and then you are brought - without any interaction required - to grub (were you have a second issue, of being asked always the password (no matter what). Since the fix for this will be in the future (bug filed for the previous version), this is not the issue. The password issue was present also in 42.3 (were no complain was there). So it is unrelated. You input the user (root) and the password of choice. Then the system starts up and stops right after loading the kernel with: error - no symbol table found - press any key to proceed. Then you press whatever key, e.g enter and all works fine up to full boot up. No other disturbances seem to be there. This happens only after the upgrade to Leap 15 / new install of Leap 15. Therefore it seems a grub2 issue? Can anybody give me some insight of the matter? Should I raise a bug? [opensuse] MSI GE63 7RD : No openSUSE Leap 15?

Finally after a long search my selection for new laptop is the MSI GE63 7RD. Several internet tests were quite positive and -most important- it is very silent. Also the Ubuntu community said that these MSI laptops are quite "standard" stuff, only few tweaks, Optimus seems to be one thing to tweak. But: after having bought this machine I have to realize that openSUSE Leap 15 does not seem to be ready for this laptop (although amazon.de lists this machine since July 3rd 2017). There is a bunch of error messages when booting it up from USB after setting Secure boot to off and fast boot also. The worst one seems to be "NMI watchdog : BUG soft lockup CPU4 stuck for 22s!" afterwards SuSE15 seems to be stuck and I have to turn off by switch. I also tried tumbleweed on a USB stick - same error. Actually I was able to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with a tweak of bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi under Windows 10 because otherwise the grub boot manager is not shown. Everything else seems to work after doing that tweak with nVidia which is described in internet all over. Does this mean I have to say goodbye to SuSE on my Laptop? Hi, everyone! I see Leap 15.0 live images have an Installation icon, but how does that installation work? Live image content is extracted to the HD / SSD? All, Stray issue with initializing an openGL application. For some reason in both 42.3 and 15 glXChooseVisual will return NULL regardless of attributes used. (even the defaults). If anyone has the glut and the openGL devel packages installed, I would like to see if anyone can confirm this behavior. [opensuse] Boot problem after latest TW dup

Old HP computer so possible hardware issues. I had issues during the dup to 20180628 and need to use the rescue system to repair grub. I cannot find an email I had with steps including 'bind -o' in them so if some kind soul could sent the procedure I would appreciate it. I've already repaired the filesystem but need to repair grub as well. I followed an opensuse advert for selling data storage for body-cams to police. It went through some redirects on google, then went to www.suse.com, where I prompt got some weird error I can't reproduce because google is serving up a different advert, and I don't know the URL because google encrypts the SSL stream (recently upgraded my squid and have yet to pop in a new local cert to decode it). This is a perfect reason why I hate needless encrypting of webpages -- as now I can't even find the URL I was on let alone reproduce the problem from it. However, I get a different but similar error if I try to goto the website directly. The connection was interrupted The connection to www.suse.com was interrupted while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. I know it isn't the proxy, as it opens in another (newer browser (opera)). So the claim is that open suse is doing this because google is forcing it. Then why am I not having the same problem with other web pages -- including google? This new encryption (if that's what it is and if it was done right) seems to be only present on opensuse systems at this point (maybe more will pop up later). But the part I find to be the most strange is that the sites that the ad was on, had no problem, I have no problems any google site (youtube, plus, etc). Just suse.com and opensuse.org. I don't have the problem on download.opensuse.org (which defaults to http for me), nor the https version used on that site. So why is opensuse causing problems for some browsers, but no one else seems to be (including download site)?
