[opensuse] mei_me 0000:00:03.0: unexpected reset

Howdy... I installed a fresh 13.1 x64 (with all updates) and I have this known problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852656 An existing installation of 12.3 x32 on the same machine doesn't show this bug. I don't need the ME/AMT services but I can't shut them off in the bios so I just want to shut off the log messages. Most of that bugzilla discussion is beyond me but I did try the temporary workaround of "echo 0000:00:03.0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/mei_me/unbind" which works fine in a console but the suggested automation of that by sticking it in an /etc/init.d/rc.local doesn't work at all. Which file can I put the echo in and have it execute at the proper time to unload the module? Thanks. [opensuse] Backup .. restore ... access/ownership

I've just been though the tedious process of restoring from backup. The 1T WD drive developed more unmappable bad sectors than it could handle, right in my /home partition! Bathtub so replaced under warranty. Tedium of doing reinstall. Previously /home had been backed up rsync to thumb-drive :-) Rsync out; rsync back in :-) It was then the task of restoring the ~/Documents, ~/Mail, ~/Music etc from DVD. Mount as /mnt/dvd then rsync into place. Step-and-repeat. I'd been a good boy and done my backups :-) OUCH! For some reason everything seemed to be r--r--r-- root.root I'd burnt the DVDs with K3B. Is this some side effect of putting a reiserFS on a DVD using K3B in data mode? Or what? Any thoughts? -- Think of managing change as an adventure. It tests your skills and abilities. hi folks new here! I am currently running Kubuntu 12.04 since nov, I am kind of looking for a change from the Buntus. Been running something buntu ( meaning xubuntu, kubuntu,) for a couple years now. I just feel like I am ready to try to learn something a bit harder. But I have one friend telling me SUSE and I am wanting to try Fedora. is one easier than the other to learn coming from the buntus? [opensuse] Mounting windows-shares

Hi, I'm migrating my laptop from Opensuse 12.2 to 13.1. One of the show-stoppers is mounting windows-shares. On 12.2 I use smb4k but on 13.1 smb4k is not working properly. So is there a way to gracefully mount windows-shares ? I know I can do this manually, on the command-line, as root. I also could add entries in fstab, but what happens when the server is not available, like at home ? I know I can browse the shares in Dolphin, but it seems not all applications can handle these "mounts", or do it in two stages like LibreOffice, with extra user/password entries and clicks. I googled a bit and I found autofs can do this also. I'm going to give that a try. Are there other options ? Thanks for your input. [opensuse] HEADS UP! for the adventurous

Milestone 0 if openSUSE 13.2 is now available but be VERY careful if you decide to install it on a multi-boot system! Your mileage may vary of course but for me it was a disaster. I downloaded the KDE Live iso and (just for a change :-) ) it actually booted into Live mode. So I decided to be very brave and actually install it. I did this on a laptop which already has 13.1 installed but I had left space to be able to install at least 2 more OSs if I chose to. I chose to install 13.2 M0 in one of the empty partitions. The installation went fine until it came to the first "reboot your computer" which is when the wheels fell off :-( . The reboot saw that there were multiple systems installed and.....went braindead and decided that it couldn't boot into any and so the whole lot defaulted to the laptop's built-in boot procedure (which knows nothing). Now I cannot boot into my existing 13.1 and, of course, 13.2 is not visible to complete the installation. I am now working thru on how I can recover but I suspect that the only way for me at the moment is re-install 13.1 from scratch. BC -- A civilisation is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable. [opensuse] 13.1/GNOME: no more software update notifications

Since some time I noticed that I get no more popups about new updates in GNOME. I usually notice that people discuss some new updates and check with zypper and see bunch of them. I must admit I failed to understand what component actually checks for updates and displays notifications. /etc/sysconfig/packagekit-background did not change since initial installation (December) and problem appeared later. Unfortunately I cannot tell exactly when. The listed test on the linked page doesn't seem to work correctly. It doesn't echo that my system is 'affected', (even though it is). Why implement a workaround that taints your kernel? [opensuse] switch from 32bit opensuse to 64bit

Hallo, I accidently installed 32 bit opensuse on several machines. Is there an easy way to switch to 64bit? such as adding 86_64 repos and zypper --dup --allow-architecture-change (unfortunately this option doesn't exist)? Any hints? A notice in the setup, that a 32bit os is going to be installed on a 64bit system would be very nice... [opensuse] Prevent system from grabbing USB bluetooth dongles?

Hi, I'm trying to use US BT dongles in a virtual box but vbox can't attach them because the host won't release them. I'm not really familiar with hardware-stuff...
