[opensuse] Why these dependency failures in KDE 4.10.4?

For the past several days+ I get these dependency failures after KDE was upgraded to 4.10.4. And as I check for updates/upgrades daily these failures are becoming a bit of a nuisance as well as a puzzlement because my expectation is that after all these days these failures would have been resolved. The failures are here: http://susepaste.org/86588486 Is anybody else experiencing these dependency failures, thanks? For information, these are the repositories I have enabled in 12.3: http://susepaste.org/4415497 An additional point re this: the options one is given to resolve dependencies are never fully explained to make a confident decision as to which option to choose. Is there some documentation which gives a fuller explanation of what each means and what may occur if one chooses the wrong/right option(s)? [opensuse] Watching videos in openSUSE 12.3

I occasionally watch videos with my computer and use my notebook computer to display on my TV via HDMI. I have noticed two issues. One, the desktop will blank out after a while and I have to press a key to bring it back. The other is when I use HDMI to carry the audio, I have to reconfigure PulseAudio to switch the audio from the internal speakers to Digital Stereo output. On Windows, the screen does not blank when playing a video and the audio is switched automatically to HDMI. Is there any way to configure openSUSE to behave in a similar manner as Windows. [opensuse] grub2 and xen guests ?

Any known issues in using grub2 with a xen domu? I tried installing 12.3 on a xen guest and chose grub2 as the bootloader (it defaulted to grub1). [opensuse] purging old kernels

I've just run into the problem of my /boot partition filling up due to multiple kernel versions, but I don't understand how to resolve it. As with all my openSUSE installations of the last few years I allotted only about 125MB to /boot having previously read that that was more than sufficient, and I've never seen any official recommendation to the contrary, but some googling now shows me that the kernel multiversioning will likely require a fair bit more space than that, which I cannot do easily given the partioning layout. I looked at the notes on this page: http://lizards.opensuse.org/tag/kernel-update/ and thought of removing the 'latest-1' element from the line 'multiversion.kernels = ' since my currently installed kernel seems to be okay. After a reboot nothing is removed from /boot. The above section in zypp.conf talks about creating a directory for multiversion definitions, but I don't know if the example file it shows can really be named 'example' or something else, and don't wish to try in case I cannot reboot. So I tried commenting out the 'multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel)' line above that. Again, a reboot makes no difference. It seems to suggest that a change would only be applied after a kernel update, but that could take months, besides which the partition is already 100% full so a new kernel likely won't install successfully anyway. How can I purge at least one older kernel (there are currently 3) directly? There's no facility in YaST software management. I could merely remove some files in /boot that wouldn't touch other files related to those kernels and is surely not a good idea. What is the proper way to go about this? All, I've struggled to setup autossh as daemon and just got it working. I hope it is reliable because I'm about to drive away and won't be back for a while. If anyone can comment on it's reliability, I'd appreciate feedback Now that I have port 22 (ssh) working, I haven't yet figured out the syntax for port 80 so any help on my second line below would be great. Also, anything else I should do to make this connection more robust? (I hope I have the monitoring port below set right?) === Details for myself or others that want to do this: autossh is designed to let you setup a reverse tunnel. That way I can have a machine behind a NAT firewall expose ssh by tunneling it through a server on the internet. Step one: Get this to work as the user you will log into the public server as: ssh user(a)www.intelligentavatar.net Then copy the ssh keyfile to /root/id_rsa_user (there may be a better way to do that) chown root.root /root/id_rsa_user chmod 600 /root/id_rsa_user Get this to work as root ssh -i /root/id_rsa_user user(a)www.intelligentavatar.net # replace user with the user name you setup on the well-known server and of course replace the server name. # make sure you accept the cert so that the above works without user interaction Then enable autossh as daemon. [opensuse] Persistence of /media across reboots.

I have encountered some unexpected behavior on openSUSE 12.1: If I create a mount point in /media (mkdir /media/abc), it may or may not be there after a reboot. I know that /media is a tmpfs in 12.1, so the contents are lost at reboot. But since the files sometimes are present after a reboot, some agent must be monitoring /media and arranging the recreation of directories. I can even change a directory name in /media, and it works fine at that time. However, when I reboot, the old named directory - and not the new one - is back. Sometimes... I am guessing that the intention is that I place these things in /mnt. I chose /media instead because the disks are hot swappable SATA disks. They have the flavor of what is usually found in /media. It seems perhaps that /media is no longer a tmpfs in 12.3. Unfortunately I need to get this working on 12.1. I see that /media is not listed in /etc/fstab on 12.1. Who/where/what mounts it as tmpfs? Can I stop it from being mounted as such? [opensuse] strange problem decrypting disc?

Hello list members, I'm on a OS 12.3 with the latest updates applied. Since an "update accident" (see description below between asterisk lines) there seems to be kind of a problem with mounting the encrypted disks at boot, the disk that contains the encrypted LVM with /, /home and swap. However, I wonder why swap, root, and home are listed the way they are and not with something line /dev/mapper..., because they are within the encrypted LVM (which I encrypted during installation). My partitions look like this: /dev/sda WDC-WD20EARS-00M /dev/sda1 /boot 156 MB, Ext4 /dev/sda2 Linux LVM, encrypted (during fresh install of system) /dev/sdb WDC-WD2002FAEX-0 /dev/sdb1 /home/daniel/disk2, reiserfs, encrypted (manually) The encrypted LVM includes /dev/system LVM2 system /dev/system/home reiserfs /home /dev/system/root reiserfs / /dev/system/swap Swap swap ********************* The described problem appears since an update accident a few days ago when the kernel changed. There was not enough free space on /boot (because I set it up to keep the old versions), so update terminated with an error message. After reboot there was a "kernel panic" and there was no way (known to me) to get the system running, also the older versions ended up with kernel panic causing "daniel-panic"... So I booted with the kde live disk, chroot-ed to the existing system, started yast in character-mode, deleted the oldest "kernel-things" on /boot, started yast in character mode, searched for everything "kernel" and selected to update these parts. After that I booted the system. With the first boot I had to enter the password for the disks 4 times. But since the second boot it is enough to enter it once and the system starts. However, during the boot process I see a "failed" message concerning Cryptography (I guess the one from the boot.log above, it goes away very fast...). It seems to me that booting takes a bit longer than before, and after logging-in as user it takes quite a while until the desktop is ready. But this is a time I feel, it is not measured... ********************** So, I wonder how I can repair my system so it is happy with the encrypted disks as it was before. [opensuse] Why does gvim need systemd?

Gvim, among several other suspicious packages has a dependency on systemd. Um...why? It seems to install and work just fine w/o systemd -- so why the dependency? I've noticed this in other packages as well -- a dependency on systemd has been tossed in with nothing in the package actually requiring systemd in order to function. So what's up w/these seemingly inaccurate dependencies? Hi all Normally one looks for browsers that supports all imaginable sorts of features. However these come at a costs. So i was wondering, isn't there a simple browser that has a smaller mem-footprint? Looking at firefox, chromium, konqueror, it seems that they (as a pre-caution) initializes the entire QT/gtk/java environment, just in case. All i needed for, is incase of a hotel/camping hotspot, you need to fill in your credentials in order to get access to the Net. [opensuse] KDE panel freezing

It might be a plugin or config or it might be a release idiosyncrasy, but this last week or so the panel at the bottom of my KDE has frozen. The clock doesn't update, the task manager doesn't let me switch and of course the menu button doesn't cause the menu to pop up. The Alt-tab switcher does work. And Alt-F2 does work. I run zypper up every few days so I'm up to date on kde4.10 as per the earlier posting about the anomaly in the repository. Could that 'out of phase' be responsible? -- How long did the whining go on when KDE2 went on KDE3? The only universal constant is change. If a species can not adapt it goes extinct. Hi all, At an openSUSE 12.3 KDE installation, without third-party repositories, zypper dup shows two packages for installation: openSUSE-release-ftp (openSUSE-release, and openSUSE-release-dvd, are already installed) and yast2-inetd-doc (yast2-inetd is already installed) I am not sure what openSUSE-release-ftp does. Does it configure the default repositories? Also, is it safe to always perform zypper dup, instead of zypper up, to openSUSE 12.3 installations without third party repositories? Thank you. Hi all, I have two openSUSE 12.3 installations in VirtualBox, one with the KDE environment without third party repositories, and one with LXDE environment with all Packman repositories. After installing the latest updates with the graphical update manager, the graphical update manager did not show any updates, at both of these installations. However zypper up, showed updates in both of them, and I installed them with it. Why didn't those updates show up in the graphical update manager? Thank you. I have a new laptop that I'm anxious to get opensuse onto. After failing miserably with both virtualbox and 12.2, and reading that 12.3 works fine with uefi, I've downloaded 12.3 and written it onto a dvd. I backed up my W7 system, but I don't want to lose the vendor-supplied recovery partition (there is, of course, no recovery dvd). When I boot into 12.3 install, I get the message, "You have to delete all existing partitions to get a valid uefi boot partition", or text to that effect. There are no other options offered (the present partition setup is corrupt due to the disastrous 12.2 attempt), and I see no way to avoid wiping the recovery partition. This is driving me nuts. I have an Opensuse system I use as a mythfrontend. How the heck to you stop screen blanking on Opensuse 12.2 running gnome? I've tried every setting I can find that has to do with power or screen saver, yet after about 20 mins it the screen starts to fade to black/blank. Hitting a key on the remote does nothing to stop the blanking, I have to physically hit a key on the keyboard attached to the system. Any help is appreciated. This is a fresh 12.3 install from dvd with some gnome elements (from package depends). All mandatory patches applied. Session startup has “launch gnome services on startup” active. Hi, I installed OpenSuse 12.3 64Bit on a new box with an ASUS Mainboard. Suse wont automatically initialize the NIC. YAST does display an entry for an "Attansic Ethernet controller" but says it cant configure the thingy because the kernel device wlan0/eth0 was missing. I found references with google that this is an older issue with those Attansic NICs. There are hints at least for OpenSuse 12.2 to install those 2 packages compat-wireless-kmp-desktop compat-wireless-scripts They should contain the ALX kernel module. I didn't find those on the DVD though. How can I obtain the needed files and how will I install them as I don't have network access without them? Hi, I'm testing openSUSE 12.3 XFCE in a spare disk on my main computer. Almost everything works, but there is something crucial that does not: hibernation. Machine is: CPU: Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz Memory Size: 8 GB gfcard: nVidia G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] driver: nouveau, drm. AFAIK, either called from the xfce menu or from commandline in text mode (pm-hibernate), it appears to go through the motions, but fails miserably to restore. In fact, I it is possible that nothing is saved to the swap, because pm-hibernate happens in 3 seconds. My work partition takes about half a minute to hibernate, but I also run more things, so more memory is used. During restore I see that the computer goes automatically to boot from the right hard disk (the key to choose boot device is disabled for one go), then goes through grub without waiting, loads something, black screen fast, and normal boot proceeds (with filesystem check). I see in "/var/log/pm-suspend.log" that the hooks are run, except one. For instance, "/etc/pm/sleep.d/99at" runs, but not "/etc/pm/sleep.d/05cosas", no mention on the log of this. But that is a minor issue. [opensuse] Wrangling Gnome and Keyboard Layouts

Dear Readers: I hope that you can help me a bit with my Gnome 3.6 struggles. Mostly, things in OpenSUSE 12.3 with Gnome 3.6 are working swimmingly. However, I cannot seem to find anyway to achieve my first or secondary goals when it comes to keyboard layouts, despite all my searching. I have two keyboard layouts. One of them is my main layout, and the other contains a host of special symbols that I use nearly as much as the main layout for certain applications. Traditionally I would have a key set to be the Mode_switch key and then pressing that key would switch me to the alternative key layout while I held down the Mode_switch key, and then, when I released that key, it would return to the original layout. In Gnome 3.6, there seems to be no way to get the keyboard layout to switch only while a certain key is pressed. Question #1: How do I enable switching keyboard layouts only while a given modifier key (Mode_switch or other) is pressed? Through all my reading I am beginning to suspect that such a thing cannot be done at all. If this is indeed the case, then I was hoping to find a way to do a decent work around. Using the tweak tool I can set Gnome to switch my layout whenever I type a certain modifier key. That's pretty good, but the key that I want to use as my modifier key is, by default, not assigned to any symbol. I can set this key as a layout switcher shortcut in the normal Gnome settings, but it doesn't actually work. If I associate it together with a modifier key, like shift, then it does work as expected. What I am looking for is a way to map this key to a key that I can use to switch the layout when I press this key. Right now, it would suffice if I could remap the key to be the right alt key together with my other right alt key (I would then have two right alt keys). I would normally do this remapping using the Xmodmap interface, but it seems that Gnome no longer loads this file at login time. What is the method for doing this now? Question #2: How do I remap an arbitrary key to be an additional right alt key? I hae scoured the internet for a solution to these questions, but I have been unable to find anything. Right now, I am at a very uncomfortable situation of using shift+key or right alt to do a switch, but only after hitting them and releasing them, not while pressed. This is very far from my ideal. In openSUSE 12.3, if I issue the commands zypper install google-a* zypper install google-* zypper install google* then all Google fonts starting with letter "a" or all Google fonts are installed, as expected. However, if I want to do the same with texlive: zypper install texlive-a* zypper install texlive-* zypper install texlive* Only the last version works as expected. The first version says "Package 'texlive-a*' not found", even though there are possibly more than 100 packages starting with "texlive-a", and the second version just installs the one package texlive-2012.20120611-3.3.1.i586. Similarly, when an enterprise distribution states that they support "ext4 file systems", there may be some newer ext4 file system features (such as bigalloc, inline_data, metadata_csum) which they do not support, even if the enterprise kernel supports said feature. Generally, in these cases the distribution will ship an /etc/mke2fs.conf file that only enables the file system features that they support when the user runs the "mke2fs -t ext4" command. [opensuse] Overloaded wireless?

All, At my parents house they have a old wireless router (maybe 7 or 8 years old). It normally works fine, but this weekend we had an extra 10 adults at their house and the wireless kept dropping from all the connected devices every minute or two. Then, this morning after everyone left, the wireless was stable again. The only thing I can think of is that there may be some kind of device limit on the router and when we exceeded the limit, it would kick off one connection in order to grant the next one and we ended up with a big game of king of the hill. Does that sound reasonable? To keep this on topic, one of the devices going on and off line was my opensuse 12.3 laptop. How does one rename an ethernet interface from the command line using udevadm? I've looked at the man page on that, and it's about as clear as lead paint. On reboot the other day, my persistent netdev rules didn't run for some reason, likely some new 'gotcha' in disabling old boot procedures. Rather than doing what I did which was to make the modules in question dynamically loadable, and bring up the system by hand and load the modules in the order I wanted them loaded, I' figured it would be easier to ask on here how one does this? If they are already installed, do I need to do a udevadm control? Or do I need a udevadm action to emulate what is going on in the 70-persistent-net.rules? These all look like 'add', so aren't there old names that need to be moved out of the way? or does adding these at "new name" automatically deleted them at "old name"? Thanks... When trying to connect to an HP ILO card, I get this error: -------------------- Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to adenauer.ilo. Sending this here too, in case anyone has a clue about odd keyboard issues... I upgraded and rebooted my server this yesterday and have some oddness when I login to it remotely now -- at least until I type "reset". The most noticeable feature is some keys on my keyboard are remapped to some foreign keys...but NOT that many. Specifically, on the left, tilda and at sign ~@ => ß§ On the left side it's the brack/brace /backslash and vertical bar -> []\ => ÄÜÖ {}| => äüö ---- My keyboard/terminal is still set to a 'linux' terminal, and locale settings look like: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE=C LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL= ---- If I type "reset", the terminal goes back to "normal". If I start an X11 app like gvim from the terminal BEFORE I reset it, the X11 app catches the weird characters as well. But if I type 'reset' (ncurses-utils-5.9 in /usr/bin/), it resets the term and then if I launch an X util, it's "normal". Anyone have an idea about what might be going on? Has anyone used systemtap on suse? It looks like it might have some neat ways to get info about the system, bus so far it's looking a bit like it isn't being maintained or some things have changed in its base to break all or many of the examples... I installed systemtap-2.0-4.2.x86_64 systemtap-docs-2.0-4.1.noarch systemtap-runtime-2.0-4.2.x86_64 systemtap-sdt-devel-2.0-4.2.x86_64 systemtap-server-2.0-4.2.x86_64 Just trying the example to show the colors and it fails miserably (below). But until there are easy ways to use the Nepomuk indexed content search Nepomuk will not be commonly installed. Kfind has a check box that tells it to "Use File Index" When that is checked Kfind appears to acutally use the index created by Nepomuck/Strigi and can find almost any single word finishes in about 20 seconds with virtually no IO. Copied photos from: /var/run/media/john/NO NAME/DCIM/ to /home/data/_data/draw/camera/temp/, (2 dolphin windows open) waited for copy to complete, (checked with 'Notifications & Jobs'), and several minutes later, selected all files in /var/run/media/john/NO NAME/DCIM/ and deleted (no, didn't move to trash :-( ) and watched ALL (ie files in BOTH windows) get deleted.... Hard lesson learned (hope I didn't want any of those photos...). [opensuse] Nepomuk - The Opposite Question

I've searched high and low on Google, and can find tons of pages about how to kill off nepomuk. But, I actually want to make it WORK. (I know, crazy, right?) I have a mountain of code that I want to wade thru, and having something that would help me find all references to specific data names, or subroutines throughout the code base would be great. So its running on the machine, it indexed a boatload of stuff, I selected the directory structures I wanted indexed, and let it do its thing. The Places portion of Dolphin shows me a list of types, one of which is Documents and all the source code modules show up in there. But I STILL can't find file names or variable names (data elements) in this source code. At least it won't find any such thing in Dolphin's built in Search.
