I'm getting many of these in /var/log/messages. I have not idea what it is. Can anyone advise? [opensuse] Performance of "cut" and "uniq"

The "cut" binary that comes with openSUSE-12.1 is much slower than the "cut" I get by building from the coreutils srcpackage files that are from the openSUSE-12.1 repository. i | coreutils | package | 8.14-3.1.2 | x86_64 | openSUSE-12.1-Oss i | coreutils | package | 8.14-3.1.2 | x86_64 | openSUSE-12.1-12.1-1.4 | coreutils | srcpackage | 8.14-3.1.2 | noarch | openSUSE-12.1-Source The difference in performance is erased by setting LANG=C (the default is en_US.UTF-8), which change makes the installed binary much faster but doesn't change the built-from-source binary performance. See examples below. "uniq" seems to be in the same boat as as "cut". Is it a known issue that building from source lets the CPU safely take advantage of short-cuts to make things faster even under UTF-8 that a packaged binary cannot? a relatively recent update upgraded digikam and now it won't start -- gives a message: QSqlDatabasePrivate::removeDatabase: connection 'ConnectionTest' is still in use, all queries will cease to work. digikam: symbol lookup error: digikam: undefined symbol: _ZN4KIPI21ImageCollectionSharedD2Ev looking at digikam's website i see a post in response to someone with the same problem: <quote> libkexiv2 shared library installed on your system is not updated with digiKam. Typically, your digiKam have been compiled with a libkexiv2 more recent, and this lib have not been updated on your system. It's a broken resolved dependecy from your distro. Contact your linux distro team to solve the problem... [opensuse] KDE hangs on rsync

Howdy all, I run rsync in a console (BASH) from time to time, usually from a script file. I have found that on my KDE 4.8.2 box that KDE hangs up in the following way from time to time. It won't switch desktops when I click or use the Alt-function key key stroke, it won't show the popups from plasmoids, and it won't switch applications using alt-tab or clicking on them. In effect, it makes multi-tasking impossible for the duration of the rsync. It usually hangs for about 5 minutes and then anything I have clicked on during that time will pop up and it will function ok for about a minute or so before hanging again. In 4.7.2 I remember my machine going slow when using rsync, but not totally hanging. I just upgraded a week or so ago. Here is my system: Box #1: 12.1 | KDE 4.8.2 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia 8500GT | 4GB RAM I have not tried running my rsync script in a tty instead of Konsole, so I don't know if the issue is with Konsole or with KDE in general. What other information do I need to post here to help communicate the problem? Hi, Since a recent update of Thunderbird and glibc on 12.1 I am experiencing trouble with Thunderbird. Thunderbird does not consistently receive new mail and gets stuck in "Loading Message..." state. I have three mail accounts set up in Thunderbird all are IMAP accounts. When Thunderbird gets stuck and I attach gdb it appears to be sitting in poll(). 0x00007f3db5b91ff3 in poll () from /lib64/libc.so.6 But that would be the main thread, thus this may be expected and useless information. One way I have found I can reproduce the problem is to delete a message from my Gmail account through my phone. If I switch to the gmail mailbox in Thunderbird prior to "bold display of the Inbox" (bold text indicates and unread message) disappearing then Thunderbird will get stuck. My guess would be that some error condition is not properly handled in this case as the message is gone from the server. But Thunderbird also gets stuck for "no apparent reason". With this I mean that it will just refuse to get new mail or refuse to load and display an unread message. # zypper info MozillaThunderbird Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Donovan, Firstly my apologies for the delayed reply. The URL above is invalid to me...not sure why but no matter. I only want to use the Yast interface for the creating of a SAMBA Server and nothing else for two reasons....Firstly to get this to work functionally for me and secondly if I cant achieve this via the Yast interface I want to clearly bug report it. Functionally I need to share info between my LAN and my WIFI LCD/LED TV/ MS Windows 7 PC's; for movie and music and image sharing from my file server...My SONY connects to my LAN no issue but cannot see my Linux LAN, only other MS PC's. I cannot get my Linux LAN to be both accessible and visible to my Windows & PC's let alone share content with my TV. Yes all devices are on the same LAN and netmask and I have no firewall issues as all are behind hardware security. I know how to drive windows 7 easy...but the GUI Yast SAMBA Server running on my file Server is just not visible. I don’t host my own domain locally and are using workgroup communality for the SAMBA common ID. [opensuse] How to stop the screen-saver when running VLC?

Using a older monitor which already has a tiny burn spot. Have the screen saver installed to start running after 10 minutes of inactivity. Running VLC or any other video viewer is now regularly interrupted by the screen-saver. >From the past I remember that there would be a possibility to tell the screen- saver not to run when some programs like VLC do their work. Found it nowhere.
