[opensuse] sharing printer to OS X - can't get to work

Hi! 11.3 is just about to come out! Excellent! However, I'm still on 11.2 and I'm pretty much stuck on trying to share printer to OS X 10.6.4. I really hope somebody can help here, even though I know that the problem can also be on OS X side. So, I'm running 11.2 and I have Canon iP4300 connected to the server via USB. I have enabled samba server (from YaST) to share folders. Works... although form time to time it seems that OS X looses the connections and can't get them up before reboot (I changed to OS X from Windows - this isn't making me happy BTW). OpenSUSE server doesn't have firewall enabled (so that at least that is not the problem). I've tried everything, but I'll try to recap now... So, on samba (YaST), I have both printers and print$ enabled. From CUPS, I have published the printer with name canonip4300. The state is "idle, accepting jobs, published". I don't even know if I should be using both Samba and CUPS... however, currently my old WinXP can use the server to print. So, now from the OS X, I can not seem to be able to print to this. I am able to add it to the printers from the OS X GUI as well as OS X CUPS. I've tried to set it with GUI methods as well as manually with these: smb://192.168.1.2/canonip4300 smb://myusername@192.168.1.2/canonip4300 smb://myusername:mypass@192.168.1.2/canonip4300 ipp://192.168.1.2/canonip4300 ipp also with the account... None of those seem to work. The user name and password disappears from Apple GUI and when I try to print something, I just get: "Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)". In the beginning I was not able to print from the old WinXP either because of authentication errors. Those I was able to solve by manually listing the linux user names to the openSUSE CUPS printer share as allowed users. I think that at this point, I also got similar authentication error on OS X, but I'm not getting those anymore. I really cannot understand where the problem is. I thought that with CUPS on both openSUSE on OS X, there should be no problems... :-( So, huge thanks to anybody who can point me to right direction! For an emerald theme that compliments the setup, use the BlackWinter theme. [opensuse] USB not working in VBox

Dear All, Recently I have installed Win 7 Enterprise Edition in Sun's VirtualBox, but cannot get USB to work. In Settings/USB devices it correctly states that it is a Kingston Data Traveller, but this line is greyed out. Down at the status bar after pulling the cursor over the USB stick icon a popup says that there is no USB devices plugged. Are there further settings needed or what did I miss? Thanks, OszkoA

[opensuse] Dual screen on 11.3 rc2 problems

I am trying to run 11.3 rc2 64-bit on a dual screen system using the KDE desktop. When it first comes up the two screens are mirrors. I configured them to have them side by side. After a reboot the settings are lost. After searching bugzilla someone said that running sax2 would solve that problem, but sax2 would soon go away. I'm currently running 11.0 using the NVidia driver in Xinerama mode. I have it set to run a slide show for the background with each picture spanning the two screens. That's not possible in KDE, but it does work in Gnome. I currently have the panel spread across the two screens. That's not possible with either KDE or Gnome. I tried installing the NVidia driver without success. See Bug 615733 in bugzilla. [opensuse] Linux friendly 802.11n Wireless Access Point

Hello openSUSE folks, I've got Cisco Linksys WAP4410N wireless access point. It works kind of intermittently with my new Toshiba Satellite A665-S6067 laptop which runs openSUSE 11.2 It lags and crawls when I try to reach any web site and then resumes normal operation while I'm navigating within that site. The lagging and crawling repeats again when I'm going to a new web site, and so on and so forth. It doesn't matter whether my laptop configured with DHCP or static IP. Initially I suspected a faulty WAP hardware and tested my notebook with another WAP4410N device. The results were the same as with the first WAP. Funny enough, this WAP expresses to the lesser extent but similar behavior when it is used with a laptop running MS Win. 7 The notebook's wireless RTL8172 chipset is not a culprit because it works perfectly at my workplace with expensive corporate WAPs (way over my price range). Could somebody please recommend, based on the personal experience, any stand alone (No router/firewall, No DSL/Cable modem) plain 802.11n Wireless Access Point which works flawlessly with Linux and doesn't cost an arm and leg. No, it's not a NIC. I tested my laptop with another identical WAP4410N device and had exacly the same problems with lagging and crawling connection speed. [opensuse] openSUSE 11.3 RC1 looks good

Just did a network install of 11.3 RC1 on my Dell laptop. I connected every USB dodad to see how hardware discovery went. Overall, things look really good. I had only these things happen (that I found thus far): 1. In the network install, the initial attempt at finding the install server failed. It then went to a character-based version, where I could specify the wi-fi and not eth0 should be used. I did not see that option in the GUI install. Perhaps I missed it. But the character install got the 11.3 install parts, and then it was business as usual with the openSUSE GUI install. 2. On my nvidia chipset, it used the Nouveau driver, which is now the default. Whereas the effects work with the the NVidia driver on 11.2, this driver keeps disabling the effects. I will see if I can get the driver to work. If not, I will change to the Nvidia driver. 3. Sound. But then again, it would not be a SUSE distro without sound issues... Sound works in YaST. But programs like Amarok emit no sound from internet audio sources. They claim to be playing something. But I hear nothing. I will sort this out. I am only describing what you get out of the can. Perhaps there is a simple solution. My overall impression is that 11.3 looks to be a keeper. For us, the last keeper (we tell our customers to buy) was 10.3. Maybe we are a .3 release user. But I think this release is worth a look.
