googling a bit earlier and i ran across this -- a recipe to allegedly get real working support for my ati radeon xpress 200m: http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Radeon_Xpress#openSUSE_11.1 i don't have my suse system in front of me at the moment, but i'm curious if any video experts can peruse that short recipe and verify that it seems to make sense. i'll give it a shot the second i get home vuz i'm *really* tired of booting into failsafe. :-) rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. [opensuse] full-fledge PDF editor for Linux

Hi all, Does anybody know of an editor that can do on Linux what Acrobat / Acrobat Pro can do on Mac/Windows? I have tried to use the PDF Import extension to the Open Office which appears barely functional - at least it is so slow as to be almost impractical. I have also tried pdfedit under Linux which seems to work fine but seems to have rather limited functionality. For instance, the capability to make bookmarks or to search through the whole document (as opposed to the current page) seems to be missing there. Any tips much appreciated. [opensuse] Firefox 3.5.3 crashing constantly while using Flash

I just updated Firefox to 3.5.3 via the Mozilla repo and since I did I have experienced multiple crashes while using Flash. I'm running the 64bit beta of Flash 10. I've ran into this on Hulu and CBS.com. openSUSE 11.0. Anybody else seeing this? [opensuse] Upgrade fails

[opensuse] opensuse 11 versus SLE 11 WRT broadcom wireless

while this is technically a question regarding SLES 11, i want to clarify how the solution differs from what i've found for opensuse 11. i want to get wireless working on my laptop running SLES 11, which has a broadcom BCM4318 chip (and NetworkManager installed). i've googled extensively and what i've noticed is that opensuse seems to have a simple solution -- running the command "/usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware", which appears to come as part of the "bcm43xx-fwcutter" package. i was hoping it would be that simple for SLES 11, but all my searching hasn't turned up anything similar. am i just missing the obvious? is there nothing equivalently straightforward for SLES 11? rday p.s. there's a long, detailed explanation of installing the b43 driver in various distros here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 so i guess i could always do it slowly and painfully, but i'm hoping for something simpler. thanks. -- ======================================================================== Robert P. [opensuse] Latest 11.0 kde factory updates 4.3.1-178, konsole hangs after running apps - Weird behavior

Listmates, After today's kde4 factory updates for 11.0, konsole has begun to hang after running apps. If I have multiple tabs open and I run an X app (locally or from a remote host), konsole will hang like it is confused as to its focus and will not accept any further input until your change focus to another application and then "change back" to konsole. You can click the mouse on konsole all day long when the hang occurs and konsole will not accept any more input or respond to any keystrokes until you leave konsole and come back. This happens 30-40 percent of the time. Konsole has been pretty bulletproof since the 4.3 beta days so I'm surprised to see this pop up. Regression? Another oddity associated with this is the mouse will cause konsole to spit gibberish out, but still will not restore the focus and proper console operation. This has only occurred once since the update, but I suspect it is a symptom of the underlying problem: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/bugs/kde4/konsole-4.3.1-178.jpg What you see at the bottom of the screenshot is the result of pressing the left, middle and right mouse buttons. What's strange is the character change after you switch mouse buttons and switch back even though you are pressing the button you pressed before, you get something new. Making shortcuts work with Desktop Effects and Compiz (Note: this became longer than originally anticipated) One place where kde4 suffers badly is in its default definition of keyboard shortcuts. (globally) It seems that every thing you might want to do with a shortcut is defined by default with a shortcut that requires you to completely rearrange your hands on the keyboard -- defeating the benefit of the "shortcut." Having to get to 'F'-anything moves the left or right hand to the complete top of the keyboard. For some reason I just find it awkward to reset coming back down from the F-keys at the top of the keyboard, but I don't find it difficult at all to use the arrow keys and then reset the right hand on the keyboard. (I'm sure it is probably due to a personal mental defect -- or the frequent use we all make of the arrow keys, one or the other) I generally try to figure out a comfortable shortcut combination to replace the awkward ones. My goal is to do it without altering any existing keyboard combination, if possible. One area in particular where kde4 suffers is with desktop effects. CTRL+F8, CTRL+F9, CTRL+F11, CTRL+SHIFT+F11 are for the birds in my book. (just look at the position your hands have to get to in order to do CTRL+SHIFT+F11) I have come up with replacements that work much better for me. You may hate them, but some may find them very convenient compared to the afterthought keystrokes kde4 offers by default. Setting the similar compiz effects to the same thing provides a seamless transition between WMs. Setup will take about 3 minutes (5 if you do both kde and compiz). For desktop effects, it is easier to set most of the shortcuts throught the kde system settings -> Computer Administration -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Global Keyboard Shortcuts -- then set "KDE Component" to KWin. (to set the shortcut, just click on the line with the Action you want to set the shortcut for and then press the button next to "Custom" (the one with the wrench on it) and enter your new keystroke) Since most CTRL and ALT combination are taken, reluctantly I use the Windows key instead. (kde detects the Windows key as a 'Meta' key, compiz calls it the 'Super' key) Below I use Win to designate the Windows key. If you have a laptop with the Windows key in some really strange location that is hard to reach, then consider using the Left-Alt or Left-CTRL instead if you can do it without getting rid of a needed shortcut) Here are the shortcuts you can set there (in the order they appear down the page): INITIATING DESKTOP CUBE Win+u Desktop Cube (compiz cube or current deformaton) Win+i Desktop Cylinder Win+p Desktop Sphere ('o' just didn't seem right for sphere...) SWITCHING DESKTOPS -- NEXT DESKTOP / PREVIOUS DESKTOP (My most used) Win+[up-arrow] Show Desktop Grid (it toggles on/off) (Compiz Expo) Win+[right-arrow] Switch to Next Desktop Win+[left-arrow] Switch to Previous Desktop Win+[down-arrow] Toggle Present Windows (Compiz Scale uses top-right of screen hot-spot, I use Win-down to unfold cube there) SCREEN EDGE (kde & compiz) [system setting -> Desktop -> Screen Edges] Top-Left Desktop Grid (compiz Expo) Top-Right Present Windows (compiz Scale)(it doesn't bother the cashew) Mid-Left Desktop Cube (kde only)* Mid-Right Desktop Cylinder (kde only)* * Compiz provides mouse activation for the desktop cube or cylinder. I change the CTRL+ALT+Button 1 default in compiz to Win+Button 1. That's it. If you give these a try, you just might find using the new desktop effects really becomes intuitive and a whole lot more convenient that struggling to use them with the default shortcuts. On the other hand, if you already like reaching across the keyboard using the defaults, then don't change a thing -- this post isn't for you. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] kde 4.3.1 works great on openSuSE 10.3 - try it!

Listmates, For those thinking you have to dump your 10.3 installs to enjoy the new kde4 -- think again. kde4 works great on 10.3. That said, there are a few things you need to know in order to successfully install kde4 on 10.3. First, the 1-click install is so broken from a dependency hell standpoint, it isn't worth the fight. Just go enable the 4 needed repos and forget the 1- click. The repos you need to configure are: (these are all 1 line below) zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openS… kde4 zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_10.… kde4comm zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Playground/openSUSE_10… kde4play zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/tools:/building/openSUSE_1… tools Next just refresh all the repositories and then in yast software management [do not just choose update all], instead of using search, select repositories then choose your new kde4 repoository. The choose package -> All Packages In List -> Update if a newer version is availabe. You will get about 20 dependency problems. Primarily the dependency problem are from the old versions (3.9.3) of the kde4 runtime already on your 10.3 box. Every place you have a Delete KDE package (check if it is 3.9.3 or svn 3.9.3, delete it). Now just work through the remaining dependencies (you will have to uninstall a few kde3 games) to get clean dependencies. Once you have clean dependencies, then just go down the kde4 package list and choose kwin, kde4-workspace, etc... Then jump to your kdecomm repository Packages -> All in List -> Update if newer available, then jump to your new kde4play repo and do the same thing. Finish cleaning up the dependencies, then click OK, and go get some coffee. Come back in an hour and your 10.3 box will be sitting there with a fresh kde4 install on it. I've done 4 10.3 boxes so far - zero problems. I actually think kde4 runs faster on 10.3 -- who knows. Good luck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
