[opensuse] Best repositories - equivalent to Debian multiverse, universe, backports?

I am sometimes frustrated by the lack of easy set-up for the equivalent of debian multiverse, universe, and ubuntu backports. What is the OpenSuse equivalent? I installed guru and packman? There are still times that packages that were easily accessible from Debian don't seem to exist for Suse. Any thoughts? There are also multi-port cards with as many as 8 parallel ports on them -- also a waste of money, IMO. Even worse is a multi-IO card with a parallel port or 2, plus 2 or more serial ports (unless you have a pressing need to connect some serial devices, which I doubt :-) ). None of these options beats the simplest one: You can connect the printer via USB (don't know which version, probably 1.1) If you don't have a USB port available, buy a USB card. Given your circumstances, this represents the best way to spend your money. USB will be around a lot longer than parallel or serial will be, and the next generation of motherboards might well not even have a parallel port.

One complaint several of my friends have with the current mechanism is that it only takes one failure of a listed package when you click on an orange/red orb for the entire update to fail. This seems slow and inefficient. Why not go ahead and install what CAN be installed and then issue a report at the end showing the failed rpms and why? On another note: I tried installing 10.2 Alpha 5. The ORB goes red and says there are 33-updates. I don't see any repositories in the list to go fetch updates and an ftp to the 10.1 site doesn't show a 10.2 directory either. This doesn't bother as it is alpha and early. However, I would like to understand how the ORB knows that it is looking for 33-updates? Cheers, Bob

Device mapping issues

I have started a new assignment where they are running SUSE Enterprise 9 sp 3 on a SunFire v40z. The machine has two SCSI hard drives. Now, the device mapper is doing strange things. It will call the 2nd hard drive /dev/dm-3 sometimes and others it will call it /dev/dm-2. My question is how do I fix this? I want it to always be /dev/dm-2. I'm going to include part of my dmesg in the hope that it will give you enough information to help me fix this. I've googled it and looked at the man page for dmsetup. I didn't see anything that jumped out at me as a fix. I saw ways to name a device. Can I make those names and then reference the device in /etc/fstab to have them auto-mounted? Zen Problem

I've started getting the following error every time I log on. System NullReferenceException. Object reference not set to an instance of an object in <0x003d6> Novell Zenworks ... I remember someone posting a solution to this that involved just deleting one or more files. It sounded very simple. But since I had never had any problems with zen (unusual, I know), I didn't pay a lot of attention to it at the time. Now, out of the clear blue, it's bitten me. Can someone tell me how to get rid of this. I'm hoping there's a simple solution. I've tried looking through the archives but there are so many zen related posts that I can't find one with that simple solution I saw. Thanks, Greg Wallace

Need Video Card Recommendation

I've been having problems with my video recently to the point that when I boot the machine the screen stays blank (no bios messages, nada). I'm suspecting that my 4 year old Radeon VE is playing out. It could be some other problem, but I'm going to try replacing the video card just to see if that fixes the problem. From years of reading on this list, I get the impression that Radeon (ATI) is not looked upon as being of the same quality as NVIDIA. Maybe I'm wrong. And maybe there's some other brand that's considered even better. I'd like to get some recommendations from the list on what brand to buy. I'm running on a desktop machine so I need a small form factor card, which I'm sure most companies make. All recommendations greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

I have followed this thread with some amusement, especially after having provided desktop support for many years. The best advice that I can offer is: If you don't know what you are doing, don't learn on a production machine. In other words, if you want that computer to work right again, don't mess with it's guts. Let someone who knows hardware look at it. All of the "help" on this, or any other, forum will only let you dig yourself in deeper and, as you may know, the first thing to do once you have figured out that you've dug yourself into a hole is to stop digging. Telephone support is somewhat better but still requires that you know some of the words before you can become a semi-intelligent remote, working at the direction of tech support. Just my 2 cents. Actually, I didn't, but I pulled the Video card out, vacuumed the slot, wiped the card connectors down with a rag, and re-inserted it. >sounds to me like you removed a pci card or recently installed one, and didnt seat it properly. >take out all the cards, wipe down the connectors, and firmly re insert them, that should do the trick? R. I have no idea how to find this out. The Dell tech support took off in a completely different direction when I asked this question, basically ignoring my question about the 2 beeps. I also scoured the Dell website and found nothing. OCR, OO, German

I have scanned in a book in German and would like to use OCR to convert the jpg files to an (enhanced, formated) text file. Which program is available? Price? Quality?
