Suse 10.1 doesn't start anymore.: help!

Hello, I have been running for months Suse 10.1 on a pc without any problem. Yesterday, all of a sudden, it stopped working. What happens is that I arrive to the Grub screen where I can choose between Suse 10.1 and Suse/failsafe mode. If I select the first, or let the timeout expire, the screen goes black in about one second and nothing happens anymore. I have to press the reset button to restart. if I select the failsafe mode, it goes almost immediately to character mode and freezes after printing "Kernel panic" and something else which unfortunately I had no possibility to write down. If I boot the Knoppix 4.02 CD, it starts and works just fine, mounts my hard disk, my files are still there... everything OK. My _feeling_ is that the MBR and/or the /root partition were corrupted in some way. What I'd like to ask is: 1) how could it have happened (that is, excluding hw faults) 2) what else could it be 3) What is the most efficient way to fix it (it's been a long time since I had to do similar things, and I'd really appreciate some pointers to go in the right direction from the beginning, without false starts... with only Knoppix 5.01 CD (not dvd) and the suse install CDs without Net access :-( (I can just ask a friend to download and burn to CD other stuff for me until this is fixed...) The PC: Asus A8N-VM Motherboard with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800, 4GB RAM Any help is welcome!! TIA, Marco

Bootsektor of a RAID 5 on SAS

Hi all, I try to install an RAID 5 on a Dell 2950 with 3 SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI) disks. I have tried two different approaches: With and without separate boot partition. 1.) With separate boot partition: I tried the following partition scheme: sd?1 40MB ext2 /boot sd?2 1GB swap swap sd?3 200GB raid / The Yast partitioner gives no error message and everything installs smoothly. The problem shows up, during booting: It can't mount, not even find the first partition. #mount /dev/sda1 /boot # Special device sda1 does not exist. Fsck doesn't find it either. But it is part of the fstab created by the installer. 2.) Without a separate boot partition: Partition scheme: sd?1 1GB swap swap sd?2 200GB raid / Here /boot is part of /. Yast's partitioner doesn't like that. Desperate as I am, I tried it. Especially, because I found some hints on the net on how to do it. It installs smoothly, but of course it doesn't boot. So I boot from the rescue CD and try to write the boot sector myself. I found out the disk geometry and created a "lilo.conf" like this: disk=/dev/md15 bios=0x80 sectors=63 heads=255 cylinders=1106 partition=/dev/md0 start=1028160 boot=/dev/sda image=/boot/vmlinux-2.2.10 label=autoraid root=/dev/md0 read-only But lilo, for some reason, didn't want to write the MBR: Fatal: raidsetup: stat ("/dev/sda") Could that be a driver problem or did I misunderstand RAID 5 or is it even something else? Updates, here we go again

Surely this is not related to the issues I had when initially installing 10.1, but I'm experiencing problems again with the updater, here is what I'm getting when trying to click on the Updates: Novell.Zenworks.Zmd.Public.ZenException: SQL logic error or missing database Server stack trace: Exception rethrown at [0]: in <0x006dc> System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy:PrivateInvoke (System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy rp, IMessage msg, System.Exception exc, System.Object[] out_args) I tried to perhaps remove all the zmd and rug stuff, but I get a lot of dependencies for YaST that need to be removed as well and not sure if I should do that. Print using a web server's print queues

Hi: This may be off topic. I have an application that uses an iPAQ to take physical inventory. The application works through the browser connecting via wi-fi to a Suse server running Apache (Suse 9.3). I need to print a summary to one of the print queues at the server, using a cgi written in C. I can write the printout to a file, and I thought I might be able to use the system command like: system ("lpr -Pprinter_name filename") but Apache will not run the system command. My only solution I can think is using a cron job that will print the files but maybe someone has a better solution. Any ideas? Thank you. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

strange sound problem - volume resets to max - suse 10.1

finally have just about everything going smooth on my 10.1:) a combination of libzypp and smart have worked well and even the blue/orange globe behaves well! found the vmware usb access workaround, sharpened mm to just about the linucs flash player limit, now i am stuck with player not showing .nuv files and a strange sound problem: each / any new app with sound resets volume to max! I have the sound settings "locked" in kmix & kamix, yet the sound resets to max even between a video ad and a video clip in the same video!!! Thats on a biostar T-force 550 board, mcp55 on board audio, suse 10.1 x86-64 os. alsa 1.0.13-0. All other updates are current, smart and yast and zmd all agree with each other and with me on that issue. suggestions please? d.

Suse 10.1 and tomcat

Hi list, i am running tomcat5 on my suse 10.1(suse is pached). I use my server as groupware with open-xchange. The problem is that tomcat5 is very slow to start during the boot process and very slow to stop during the shutdown. The odd thing is that if i stop the process with the following command, tomcat is stopped immediatly: #rctomcat stop I don't know what appens during the boot or shutdown. Can you help me? Permission Denied problem on modprobe.conf.local
