Problems with Abit VA-10 v1.1

Hi, I upgrade the motherboard of my computer to a Abit VA-10. The installation of SuSE 9.0 was very difficult because the onboard video card (S3 type), even I using a non-onboard nvidea video card. During setup, when Linux was testing the hardware installed the computer stopped to work, after a reset it works good, but ... I cannot configure my video card via sax2 and a strange thing happens, the keyboard map appears to change in GUI mode and so, I cannot enter my password. After several installations I was used a editor to found what a type and see that one key was changed, in KDE I go to ControlCenter and change the keyboard layout (to the same that I use, sic!) and the keyboard is ok, for me as a user and for root, but still not work in initial login. So I have to ask to do. Firstly, how to configure my video card via text mode? Secondly, how can I configure the keyboard layout used by kdm? Thank you very much Thadeu

KDE login fails with NIS user (Suse 9.0)

Hello I ran into a very strange problem where KDE login crashes with signal 11 butonly when trying to login as a NIS user. It does not matter whether the home folder is on local disk or on a NFS mount point. Local user logins works just fine. Hi. I use SuSE 9.0 here. After an uninstall, how long time will it take before its not longer possible to see the places where the old install parts was installed by using locate ?. Hi list. Does anyone know if it is possible to access SuSE 8.2's KDE 'Control Center' via an xterm during a vnc connection? If so, what is the command's syntax, please? How to set a reiserfs partition fsck occasionally?

While the new logging filesystems are a great improvement my experience is that they can't survive forever in the real world without an occasional rebuild or fsck. This list has had warnings by people burnt by reiserfs. I haven't (yet) lost any data but have had some scary times. This hasn't been bugs in reiserfs (3.6) itself as most instability was tracked to (very marginally) flakey RAM. However while the glitches were caused by corrupt RAM they left me with faults in the filesystem, faults that persisted across reboots. These included un-list-able and un-cat-able files. ie: read or ask the size of that file and it's bye-bye to that terminal. It made the whole system unuseable as processes "trod on the cracks" and hung. Backups? Hah, not with that file in the partition. So I think a lot of bad press stems from the misconception that any filesystem can avoid bitrot forever without an fsck. But this is painful to do by hand, I have to boot a rescue system and run reiserfsck by hand, to do the root and system partitions. How can I get back the old behaviour an fsck happening during reboot every x reboots or y days? Or, how can I trigger an "fsck reboot"? TIA, michaelj PS: I've just realized I can do it by adding an fsck into the linuxrc script of a cooked initrd image. That would give me an "fsck boot" option in grub. how to get an alert when hard disk is nearly full?

Hello! A few days ago, I set up a Ksysguard applet in my (task)bar to know how much my hard disk is filled. There is also a possiblity to ask for an alert when it reaches a certain percentage. This alert, if I understand it well consists in the percentage changing of color. That's nearly what I wanted to have. In this case, I have to regularly have a look at this little figure to make sure I am not using too much disk space. Is there a possibility to get a small dialog box telling me that I've exceeded an certain level? Maybe even without that applet displayed? Thanks for you help! Patrick -- config: 8.2 / KDE 3.1
