Raid 0 speed question

Hi all, For those who have lots of experience with this: I need more hard drive space and a faster disc too. Assuming software based raid is reliable enough for a home user, and money is very tight, I have two options: 1. Buy a new fast disc 2. Use kernel software raid to mirror the current Western Digital Caviar 5400rpm 2mb cache 10gb drive with a 10gb partition on a new (but now very cheap) 5400rpm 40gb drive. The remaining 30gb on the new disc would be /home Which setup would be faster? Thanks Hans

Realplay and Flash plugin problem

Running SuSE 8.2 on an Athlon 1.3GHz Thunderbird, I reproducibly find that the browser plug-ins for Realplayer and Flash don't work in Mozilla. This happens with all versions of Mozilla, including the version included on the SuSE CDs (1.2.1 I believe), the current version 1.4 and the 1.5 beta from the mozilla.org page, and the 1.4 RPM from usr-local-bin.org. Realplayer: I've copied the rpnp.so and raclass.zip files as requested. Although the stand-alone Realplayer works fine when started from the shell by typing "realplay", the plug-in doesn't seem to work. The pop-up window with the Realplayer interface appears, then the program just stops responding, causing Mozilla to "hang". With the RPM version from usr-local-bin, I still seem to be able to close Mozilla by closing the konsole from which I've started the program; with the other versions, there seems to be no way to close the Mozilla window at all. Flash: Again, the plug-ins are installed as per Mozilla's instructions. When visiting a site with Flash content (e.g. macromedia.com) Mozilla just crashes and exits with a segfault. This happens both with the Flash plug-in on the SuSE CDs and with the version downloaded from macromedia.com. Does anyone know what this behaviour means, and how to remedy it? Horrific spam/virus - fetchmail?

I've been getting more and more each day of this latest virus, each with a bonus attachement of about 140k. So far, 48 today - this is a mess on a 56k dial-up... I have fetchmail getting my mail from five different pop accounts. Is there a way to tell fetchmail to delete anything with exe attachments from the server without downloading them? Or another commandline tool that would do that? Something I can have in a script that would run before fetchmail? Deleting them from the servers manually (there is a webinterface, or using something like kshowmail), is not really an option - too much mail coming in per day, and this would (so far, thankfully) actually take more time online while the meter's running... Hello! Just as, probably, some of you, i am tired of getting tons of 150kb messages containg yet-another-worm-for windows. Does anybody have a good advise about how could i use my procmail on my server to filter it out? how to bounce it?

Help with combo drive and K3b

Cry for help here. Just upgraded to K3b 0.9 and I am unable to see my LG 4480B CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. I ran the K3b config as root and it did detect my drive as a writer. Also added my self to the users list but when logged in as myself k3b does not recognize the drive (as a RW). How to restore shipping kernel and modules

OK I screwed up in an attempt to "optimize" a self-compiled kernel using Suse 8.2 pro. All works fine except hotplug fails to start. At this point I just don't have the time to learn how to diagnose and fix this. Sadly, before the recompilation I lacked the brains to backup the shipping 2.2.40-4GB modules. I have the original kernel. How do I restore the shipping modules into /lib/modules? TIA, Bernd

SuSE 8.2: proper firewall configuration?

I'm using SuSE 8.2, which I've just reinstalled after repartitioning my hard drive, and while I'm busily re-downloading updates and re-installing programs, I've realized that I don't really know if the firewall checkbox I chose when I was setting up my dialup connection is doing anything. Does 8.2 automatically set the firewall up right, or do I have to tweak it? If the latter, can anyone hold my hand through the process? Also, anybody know a good page for testing the firewall? I've used Symantec's security tester on the Windows side of things, but they don't support Linux. Are there any other steps I should take to make sure my box doesn't get hacked? I realize that just by using Linux I've taken the biggest step, but it'd be embarrassing to fall victim to something I could have stopped with a click or a few command lines...

XConfig in different distributions

Can I take a old XF86Config-4 for my machine (Mandrake's and working pefectly) and put it as the XF86Config-4 for my Suse 8.2 pro? Actually I would only need to substitute the monitor part. cdrecord ignores speed=#...

Good day, cdrecord version 2.0, under SuSE Linux 8.2 Pro. I want to burn a CD-RW with 1X. No matter what speed I set, cdrecord ignores it and burns with approximately 4X (which is the media's burning ability according to its ATIP). Before the burn starts, cdrecord always says that it will burn at 2X, but the actual burning is always done with 4X I have tried to set the speed to 0, 1 and 2 to no avail. The environment variable CDR_SPEED is empty, and there is no settings file for cdrecord on the system. So there should not be any settings overruling my command ilne. It makes no difference if I burn as root or as a normal user. Under SuSE 8.1 cdrecord always honored my speed requests, with this very drive and with the same media. I have not found any usable solutions on the great internet. Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

Appearance of Qt apps messed up by gnome-settings-daemon

Hi, the fonts in gtk2 apps (menus, dialogs, etc.) appear small and hardly readable, unless I have gnome-settings-daemon running. But... menus and dialogs etc. in Qt apps appear extremely large then. If I go to K Control Center > Appearance > Fonts and adjust the menu of, say, Opera to normal, then the menu fonts of Konsole are way too small. Setting this to normal make other menu fonts appear very large. Button text and dialogs in Opera are way too big and can't be changed. These are just a few examples. In short, gnome-setting-daemon messes up the appearance of Qt apps. I ended up _not_ using gnome-settings-daemon any more, and avoiding gtk2 apps wherever possible. The big unsolved mystery is: why do the gnome2 settings affect Qt??? Can it be switched off? S.H.

Updating KDE for SuSE 8.1

How does one upgrade KDE for Suse 8.1? Just download all the RPM's and do an rpm -ivh rpm-file.rpm? Do they need to be installed in any particular order? Does the rpm command need to do an upgrade instead of an install of the RPM? -Thanks- Jim

Can Linux be a Windows Log server?

I know how to setup a UNIX/Linux log server and have the other boxes forward their logs to it. Can Windows boxes be setup to forward their logs to a Linux box? Does Windows even have the concept of configurable logging? Does my question even make sense? Greg -- Greg Freemyer

[SLE] problems with SBC DSL Internet

I'm a linux newbie, and I've just signed up for SBC DSL Internet Access, and I'm having a world of trouble getting it to work with Linux. After speaking with the tech support idiots (they told me Linux doesn't support DSL), I've spent quite a bit of time trolling the internet for answers. I'm running Suse 8.2, I have a Speedstream DSL modem that SBC gave me, connected via Ethernet. I installed Roaring Penguin's RP-PPPOE but it still won't recognize the modem and the connection won't work. Does anyone use SBC or a similar service that can help me out getting it up and running? It already works on my windows computer, so I don't need to sign up with them, just get linux to recognize the connection. Also, as far as the Ethernet settings, should DHCP be turned on for this, or should I use a static IP address? Thanks, Casey Petersen

apt-get through http proxy, anybody?

Hi list users! I followed the discussion on apt, and decided to give it a try using it. OK, I installed everything including synaptic, but I definitely have problem with proxy settings. I can not make apt-get nor synaptic work through an http proxy. I managed to make it with other programs (like wget, fou4s etc) but it doesn't work with apt and synaptic. When I try "update", it simply fail to connect to servers from sources.list file. I tried to search through apt users list, but no results while searching for "proxy" there. Or, I may be blind for something obvious here. Even though this might be a little OT for this list, I decided to ask SLE users for any advice for this problem. I was bumping around this enigmail thing and created a key. But I don't think I'm able to use it right now. Do I have to upload this to some public server or something? What I really wanted to be able to do is create signed email first and then look into doing encrypted email. But for encription is a public server really necessary? I thought I could just ship the recipient the public key.

I have a problem concerning the Mail Managing. I use pine to send my emails. After Configuraing the Domain and Hostname I was able to send my emails but i couldn;t receive any of them. No i changed the Network Services a little through root account and i cannot send email either. Do you know what is going on? Problem installing SuSE-8.2 on Laptop Toshiba Satellite 400

Last Sunday I tried with knowers to install Debian Woody with a 2.4 kernel: impossible to install the network and PCMCIA interfaces because Woody Debian did not have xircom_tulip_cb kernel module. No problem to initiate internet connection with Knoppix (how I found the needed kernel module). This morning I wanted to install SuSE-8.2 on the same Laptop (already did it on a box with 2000Gb Athlon-AMD): problems, problems, problems much alike the one I had with Woody Debian. At first reboot: It get stucked when trying to start the kernel pcmcia (solved when removing the cardbus) Impossible to mount an usb mass-storage device: everything get stucked when I type "mount /media/sda1", no messages, it get stucked Windows-like -> hard shutdown. Sometimes at boot I have "resource manager failed". eth-pcmcia is OK activating usb-devices: OK I only managed to boot the installed system by launching it from nr 1 install CDRom. URGENTLY NEED HELP - Postfix and spam

I've just noticed in the last two days something has gone horribly wrong with Postfix on SuSE 8.1. My machine has got a massive queue of emails that it is attempting to send to AOL customers that I never sent myself. AOL is refusing connections, so these emails are sitting in the queue. I've just quickly done a few mail relay tests and all passed. Now I'm not sure if it is due to the Spammer being on the same ISP as myself or due to some other problem with Postfix. I had configured it to "Soft Bounce" emails as I've been testing a few things. How can I remove all these emails from the queue, as it is sending hundreds of requests to AOLs mail servers, and this is probably not a good idea. Thanks Adam
