nic problem

Hi kids. I came home from work today and found my 8.2 box locked up, so I hit the reset button and moved on. I popped open a Guiness and sat down ready to read some email when I noticed that I couldn't access the net. Upon further examination, I found that when I ran an rcnetwork restart, my eth0 failed to come up. When I run an ifconfig all I see is my lo. My router port lights up and my lights on the back of my nic light up. I can't ping my box from my wife's laptop (w2k). So, anyone have any ideas? I tried reseating the nic. If I delete my nic from yast and start over, my nic pops right up and is identified. I'm out of options. Thanks, Tom

Hi. Have Gaim working ok here. Use SuSE 8.2. I want to put a michrophone on Gaim. All the sounds conditions has been checked, and are installed with reference to what is written on the Gaim homepage. NVidia Drive for SuSE 8.2

I'm a little befuddled by the NVidia update for SuSE 8.2. I had the driver, can't remember why I lost it, but now it's not in YaST and the actual "NVidia download" will not compile the necessary mods and just hangs. Does anyone know where i can find an RPM for it? I'm running 8.2 with KDE 3.1 on an NVidia Geforce2 64Mb card. Thanks in advance for the help. :) -- "Turd Ferguson. renaming KPPP icon on desktop

I can't rename this KPPP icon to something like "Connect to my ISP". In the properties tab the name KPPP is grey. Why? How could I rename this icon? Thanks for any help. a. net-snmp

I wanted to install the successor of ucdsnmp, which is net-snmp (http://net-snmp.sf.net) However, this does not seem so easy. Does any have experience with installing net-snmp from an rpm on suse? I tried to install the net-snmp rpm from redhat, but that does not match with the libraries that suse (8.2) has installed and what the rpms requires. Alright no big deal, have the src.rpm rebuild I thought. So, I went ahead and started to build the rpm as regular user. To my big surprise the rpm build wanted to install binaries in the current file system (/usr, /etc, etc...) instead of /tmp/build-root/{usr,etc} etc. It seems the net-snmp Makefile does not accept the "make DESTDIR=... install" construct.... Is this a "bug" in the net-snmp sources, and it be done otherwise? So, I went of to the next trick and started to use "build", which sets up an chroot-ed environment to build the rpms. Now to my big surprise not all files are installed in the chroot-ed environment but in the "host" environment (see output below). Why does that happen? Is that a bug in rpm, the "build" script, something else??? All in all, I learned a lot. But I still don't have an rpm? Any one? Last thought, why does suse still distributes the "older" ucdsnmp package instead of the newer net-snmp package? I'm having problems compiling the 2.4.20 kernel provided by SuSE and I want to try compiling the 2.4.22 kernel instead. Is their anyway to patch in the SuSE specific features like the splash screen and modified tty terminal on tty1? Likewise, how would I go about doing this to one of the experimental 2.5 kernels? Alternatively, is their a kernel source for the 2.4.22 kernel that has these features already put in the source?

Apache web server problem

Hello Admins. I have a question for you guys, I am trying to run Big Brother Network Monitor Software in SUSE 8.1 Box but I attemp to start it to view it as web page I get the error of permission deny to the path I have setup. for example I created a symbolic link from /home/bbuser/bb to /srv/www/htdocs/bb so when I go to /var/log/httpd/error_log I see the following: Symbolic link not allowed: /srv/www/htdocs/bb/ I read the docs for BIg Brother and it mention to set it up inside the httpd.conf but I can find the exact location in this file nor I know what's the sysntax. I have looked at this file and try to follow the syntax in the areas that talk about Alias but no luck. Please Help.... Regards, Mario Mira

Running X programs as non root

Hello: I have some programs that try to run but fail to open the X display device. However it works fine when I am logged in and running X as root. I thought the 'sux' command would fix this program. Is there any way to run these programs short of logging out and starting X as root? Thanks, Jim
