I've never used IRC, but I need to take part in a 8 person IRC meeting on monday. What's an easy client for me to use? And how do I invoke it? (I'm very CLI inclined, so I don't use X much.) Hopefully one that is built into SuSE 8.0. TIA Greg

DSL Connection on Laptop

Hi, I installed SUSE 8.1 on a laptop, but i have a problem with my dsl connection. after configuring the ethernet card and dsl, i receive following log output when i try to connect: SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd), Version 0.78 on linux. wwwoffle not is running Selection of interface/provider "dsl0"/"DSL provider" succeeded. My LAN User can not surfing in internet after sometimes (not always can).

Dear my friends.... I am using SuSE Linux 8.1 as an internet gateway with squid, SuSEfirewall, BIND8 and ip-masquerading. It works properly but not always because some times, my LAN user can not surfing in internet. The error message on their browser in under below: " The requested URL could not be retrieved While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.yahoo.com/ The following error was encountered: Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.yahoo.com The dnsserver returned: No DNS records This means that: The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. Check if the address is correct. Your cache administrator is webmaster. What about making changes to the httpd.conf file? I know that to add the WARP Connector to the httpd.conf file, you usually have to enable HTTPD_SEC_MOD_TOMCAT=yes in the /etc/sysconfig/apache file and then run SuSEconfig again to allow the module to be added to httpd.conf. Is there something similar that needs to be done to add additional applications that need to be deployed using WARP Connectors for example LoadModule webap_module modules/mod_webapp.so WebAppConnection warpConnection warp ip-address:8008 WebAppDeploy examples warpConnection /examples/ The first line as I understand is added when SuSEconfig is run, is there something similar that needs to be done to add the other two lines or do they just need to be manually put in. Not sure I follow you. If you updated files in $CATALINA_HOME/conf then you may just have to restart tomcat (su; /etc/init.d/tomcat restart (I think it's called tomcat anyway). Other than that, I don't think there is anything that depends on tomcat that you need to be concerned about. You may want to consider upgrading too, 4.1.18 is a pretty solid version and has some nice graphical tools for managing your installation, restarting the server, and installing new web applications (http://localhost:8080/admin & http://localhost:8080/manage) I don't know if these are in 4.0.1. Tomcat Configuration

Folks, I have a running Tomcat installation version 4.0.1 and Apache 1.3.23. I have done manual tweaks to the Tomcat configuration files previously on different distributions but not on SuSE 8.0. I would like to know if there is some kind of a graphical manager or some scripts that need to be run before/after the tweaks are done so that if there are any dependencies they can be maintained. SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.1 and Upgrade

Hi there ! I am wondering if I can upgrade my SuSE 8.1 from KDE 3.03 to KDE 3.1 by compiling SRC RPM for my own distro, without causing strange behaviour to YOU As far as I know, When I upgrade my system through YOU to KDE 3.05, the systems always switch back to KDE 3.03 when I installl package through Yast->Install/remove Packages So if I install KDE 3.1 without passing through YaST, I am wondering if all will work perfectly after. Could you tell me if you got problems by upgrading to KDE 3.1 with YOU ? arnaud

I had thought about that, but I'm not sure that it would know about the new packages. I looked at the 'packages' file on the install media (/media/cdrom/suse/setup/descr/packages), and it looks like its keeping track of package versions and patch numbers. I think this would be successful if there was a tool that could automatically regenerate (or build) this package file that I could run each time I added a new package. I don't know if periodic updates to this file would confuse the package manager or not? (It may keep a cached version of this 'packages' file locally so it knows what media is needed for which package...) SuSE's new (as of SuSE 8.1 / United Linux 1.0) disto/package layout is documented here: /usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-packagemanager/media-descr.htm Does anybody know of any tools that can take a repository of rpm files and automatically build these description files. Correct Method to update clean 8.1 to kde 3.1?

what is the cleanest method of updating a clean 8.1 install to kde 3.1? i've played around with doing rpm -Uvh and rpm -Fvh on the downloaded rpms but it always fails to update correctly. thanks -- michael

My SuSE Linux is very slow sometimes.

Dear my friends.... I wonder why my SuSE Linux 8.1 becomes very slow sometimes. It becomes slow if my harddisk suddenly being busy because of an unknown process. I guess because fsck but I am not sure. What is the unknown process actually? And how can I stop /cease it ?
