meaning of /proc/sys/kernel/sem

Dear all, Can anyone explain to me the meaning of the four numbers inside "cat /proc/sys/kernel/sem" ? My machine shows : "250 32000 32 128" as default. Thanks, Raymond.

Anyone experiencing issues with Python/Tkinter on 7.3?

Hello, Last night I was trying some "Hello, world" example with python and Tkinter on my new 7.3 installation and Tkinter doesn't seem to be working right. I should point out that I'm not using tkinter-only package python-tkinter, I'm using the larger package that includes tkinter + a few other things -- python-tk. I'm at work now and my python book is at home, but to the best of my memory the program was like this: from Tkinter import * widget = Button(None, text='Hello world', command='exit') widget.pack() widget.mainloop() I was doing this in KDE 2.2.2 if it matters. Anyway, a new window would pop up titled "Tk" but there would be no button and no text and clicking it wouldn't make it go away (so I know the main window wasn't acting as a button). I know I've used Tkinter on older versions of SuSE/KDE, I just wonder if the example I was using doesn't apply to 7.3's version of Python/Tk, or if there's something broken with them or what? NTP or netdate? kind of lost

Greetings all, We´d been having a problem with the time on our Suse server, so my boss asked to fix it. Now I want to use xntp package for time synchronization, but I got no clue to start with :( Does anyone have any experience on this subject? what should I use ntp or netdate? thanks

SuSE 7.1 w/ 2.4 kernel and VMware 2.0.4

I am trying to get Vmware 2.0.4 to work after upgrading machines and kernels. I am using the 2.4.0 kernel from 7.1 and the Workstation version of VMware. When I use the Configuration Wizard and try to use an existing partition as a raw disk, everything looks fine, but when I "power on" the VM, I get: Unable to scan the partitions on the /dev/hda device. The safe raw disk can be recreated using the "Configuration Editor" in the "Settings" menu Failed to configure ide0:0. I have tried this as root and as a user in the trusted group (/dev/hda is root.trusted). Any ideas? TIA, Jeffrey

Installing KOffice 1.1.1 from SuSE

Downloaded KOffice 1.1.1 from S.u.S.E. and installed it. Installation went smoothely except for 1 thing. It didn't register on the KDE menu. I can call the individual applications from the command line, but shouldn't there be an easier way (e.g. from a place on the KDE Menu?) Thanks -- dj tuchler dtuchler(a)earthlink.net 314-977-2793

Damaged Hard Disk with Linux

Hi list, I have got a damaged hard disk. It has only one sector which is bad. I have been using it with Windows for 3 months since the problem came out. Now I would like to turn the machine into a linux machine. There is a way to make linux ignore that sector, just like scandisk does for windows? There is a way to do that on BSD? (I know this is not a BSD list, but if you know the answer....). TIA, Praise

making lots of copies of one file

Hi: How can I make lots(for example 5) of copies of a file.. (from the command line, not writing a script). I tried this but it didnt work..: $ for f in "file[1-5]" ; do `cp file $f` ; done and it made a copy called file[1-5] :-( Any pointers?? Thanks! Raul

Drirectory Listing...

...I just did a test of my network through Cerebus Internet Testing and found some holes in my network. The main one I am worried about is that the scripts directory of my Firewall has directory listing and I need to disable that. Any ideas. How can I shut this off for my whole Firewall box? I have looked through some manuals and have not found any mention of it.
