Hello, Can someone give me any idea how can I configure my FTP server to let the guest user can be able to use the ls command? My configuration file is like the following: $ vi /etc/inetd.conf ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd -a $ vi /etc/ftpaccess # email of the responsible person for the %E-cookie email choth(a)of.forum.org.kh class all real,guest * limit all 10 Any /etc/ftpmsg.dead readme README* login readme README* cwd=* shutdown /etc/shutmsg message /welcome.msg login message .message cwd=* compress yes all tar yes all #log commands real log transfers real inbound,outbound # do not give "core"-files in any directory. noretrieve core .notar guestuser ftptest guestgroup ftponly greeting full $ vi /etc/passwd ftptest:x:502:500::/home/ftptest/./:/bin/ftponly $ vi /etc/shells /bin/ftponly $ vi /etc/group ftponly:x:500:ftptest But if I change ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd -a to ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd and restart /etc/rc.d/inetd restart then the users can change to another directory, but I do not want them to be able to change to another directory just only his home directory. [SLE] Installing SUSE 8.1 Under VmWare

Howdy; First, I hope this is the right mailing list. . . . I'm installing SUSE 8.1 under VmWare workstation 3.1.1 And it keeps freezing on the installation. This is my first time installing Linux, so I could be doing something wrong. I have talked to my buddy and he walked me thru some of the process. But it froze soon after. I have done an all text install, and the 640x480 GUI install. Both freeze on me. . . I have made a 10gig partition just for the SUSE 8.1 to install. Its on partition "k." Comp specs: Win2k server Athlon 1800+ 1024mb pc-133 wd 120gb hd etc. I've allocated 512mb of ram to SUSE. I have pressed ctrl+alt while it's installing, would that have anything to do with it freezing? i just installed gnome2 from suse, thing did not go that good i noticed gnomem2 is in my path, i would like to remove it, i dont know how it got there i looked at /etc/profile and .xinitrc and there is not entry for gnome2 to be in the path. where should i be looking at or how can i remove gnome2 from the path witout removing packages

Hello all-- Apologies for this (hopefully very brief) off-topic thread. I'm hoping that a few references may be made, by the knowledgeable people on this list, to a few good sources of thought and conjecture regarding the following-- Although I presume (personally hope) other countries will pursue better alternatives, as a U.S. citizen and after reading a little about the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance, Microsoft's Palladium initiative, the "Fritz" chip and the cooperative responses by the U.S. government so far to Microsoft and to the entertainment industry (regarding "digital rights management") I have become somewhat worried about the future of Linux, and computing in general, in the U.S. Could someone refer to one or more good Internet sources where one may be able to read the comments and ideas of those who really know and understand this subject? No pause character in modem dial string

I'm attempting to set up my modem via YaST2. All works well until I try to enter a comma in the dial-string ie:9,xxxxxx It seems YaST2 will not accept a comma in the dial string. Anyone know of a circumvention ? TIA Gary Ernst

Strange ./configure Error Message

I'm trying to install the latest version of Quanta. Yast and apt do not have the latest version, so I d/l'd the bz2 file from Sourceforge. After I expanded the file, I went to run ./configure, and got the following: bronxville:/home/lms/Documents/Downloads/quanta-3.0 # ./configure bash: ./configure: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied bronxville:/home/lms/Documents/Downloads/quanta-3.0 # I'm running SuSE 8.1. I'm not a programmer, so the whole build process is something I do rote, without really understanding what's going on. I don't want to be a programmer either; I just want to run the app! driver for old vga was in sax, where in sax2?

I have an old 14" 33g4577 ibm/samsung monitor that can not display svga or above (i.e. it is only vga compatable). In 7.0 I was able to pick a generic 600x480 monitor that worked (I *think* it was an LCD-600x480@60Hz in 7.0), but in 8.1 I can't seem to find a non-svga+ driver. Devices permissions?

Ok, I am not getting any response from the graphic eq in either xmms or freeamp, and certain functionalities also seem limited. I am wondering if the device permissions need to be reset. I have a few devices set to my user account under ownership and several set under "users" under groups (and then there are a few set under things like audio, disks, etc, etc,...). I have read that audio devices such as dsp, mixer and the lot may give cracks and pops if not set to root. I am also wondering if this causes the players like xmms and freeamp, et al not to have access to the need devices/files to allow for the eq to work. And also what other limitations of devices does setting or not setting certain things to root in the /dev directory have or do? So, should every device in /dev directory be set to root for ownership? If not what devices should be set to root and which may be set otherwise? And as for group permissions, any pointers as to how or what the group permissions should be set for x/y/z devices?
