[SuSE Linux] fetchmail crontab

[SuSE Linux] The Hardest Linux Installs

Well, been experimenting with a variety of distributions the last few days since I have 3 gigs open on a secondary hard disk drive. Installed the following distributions: Redhat 5.0 and 5.1 from cheapbytes Slackware 3.6 Caldera 1.2 base package along with staroffice 4 and other stuff SuSE 5.0 to 5.3 Now waiting for redhat 5.2 and turbolinux. So my extremely subjective opinion is that redhat installs quite easily and has some nice tools to build networking options, printing, etc. Caldera has an okay install packaging approach using LISA but it populates some menus with things that do not seem to work or claim to be old things. This is rather strange to me but, hey, most stuff works. Slackware. Man this is one hard thing to install. I think you have to be some linux guru or something to maximize your investment in slack. Some issues are that the gui setup program will not mount the cd correctly; but at the shell prompt, no problems. I also found the setup program extremely obtuse and hard to learn my way around in. SuSE 5.0 to 5.3 are extremely easy to install. If I had never done a linux installation before, I think honestly that redhat's install routine would grab me first. It seems intuitive and easy to grok. With SuSE 5.0 I had some false starts with rebooting and having yast running over and over again for no apparent reason since it just aborts. SuSE 5.3 works nicely and is my regular old desktop of choice. To be honest, though, I think when people see how SuSE sets things up and get used to the "SuSE way" it becomes apparent that SuSE is exemplary at setting up user interfaces and ways of doing things at a central level. It will be interesting to contrast SuSE 5.3 and RedHat 5.2. Even more so, when SuSE 6.0 makes its debut. I am still experimenting around with various ways of setting up two dists on one system. I think Michael Johnson is right regarding booting and lilo. I also subscribe to the svlug digest and Rick Moen has been quite helpful with some advice on this. Next thing is to try something like BEos or BSD. BEos looks rather interesting and my hardware is supported. -- Michael E. If I use an rpm, I have to wonder about the security issues of installing a pre-compiled binary as root. It adds another "layer of abstraction" between me and the application. The rpm also forces me to install to a pre-determined directory. I left windows because I wanted more control over these things, this whole rpm thing is forcing everything back to a windows style of installation. The whole rpm-database thing is just a "registry waiting to happen". On quite a few occaisions, I deleted some programs, manually, without going thru the rpm -remove procedure, and the rpm wouldn't install because the database said it was already installed. Sure, I can tell it to force it, or upgrade it, but why even deal with these things. In summary, I prefer to compile a package, copy it to a location of my choosing, and delete it anyway I want. Of course, for installing new systems, the rpm format is nice. At least Suse provides MD5sums for all it's rpm's, Redhat does not. Everytime you install a binary rpm as root, you open "exposing your system to possible trouble". [SuSE Linux] Installed Wmaker .50 now things are a mess

I just installed the latest version of Windowmaker .50 and as per the instructions, I de-installed the version that I installed with YaST on my SuSE 5.3 system. I did wmaker.inst as the last step. While the make, comile etc went fine, and I can start wmaker using the command: tartx /usr/local/bin/wmaker how can I get wmaker to appear in the fvwm "other Window managers" box? I prefer to run Gnome and choose wmaker as the manager but it does not appear as a selection. Thanks in advance!! I purchased the full SuSE 5.3 package, and the Linux Office Suite 99 package... I've tried several other flavors of Linux, but the SuSE 5.3 is by far the most complete, easiest to configure, user friendly Unix-based operating system that I've ever used... I love it... Until this release, I would not have felt comfortable in recommending Linux to a novice computer user... About Databases: I'm quite pleased with the way Adabas D installs, but I have one request... You really need a GUI front end for Adabas D, similar to MS Access. It's the only thing the Adabas D application is missing... The starbase frontend that comes with StarOffice is a great idea, but I haven't had time to play with it yet, so I don't know if it will do what I want... I also don't know if it will work with Adabas or not yet... I have tried a few of the GUI front-ends available, but the only one I've tried that allows updates and modifications to existing table designs is MS Access... I will not be happy, until I find a GUI front-end that allows me to add, remove or modify fields in a table, after the initial table has been created... As a general rule, I'm incredibly happy with the 5.3 version of SuSE, and I'm looking forward to purchasing the 6.0 version as soon as it's ready to ship... Have a great weekend... sorry I lost the original message and my user accound wouldnt let me read in the rc.config so... I would like very much to use WordPerfect 8 for Linux. However, I cannot, as I suspect the majority of the business world cannot. Why? Simply, because it does not interoperate with an (unfortunately) Microsoft-based office very well. Here is what I have found: WordPerfect 8 does not import Word98 documents. This is a show-stopper, as Word98 is a standard among all businesses that I deal with. WordPerfect 8 does not import Word95 documents very well. For instance, it ignores page orientation: all documents are assumed to be portrait. And it's generally unreliable. It does not strictly maintain fonts, pagination, etc. WordPerfect 8 does not automatically figure out what type of file to import. I am not going to waste my time telling WordPerfect to try each file type in turn. When I ask it to open a file, it should open it. If it cannot intelligently figure out the file type, it should try each file type in turn until it finds one that works. This is critical for companies that have been around a long time, and have archives of documents in many different formats. Once these deficiencies are fixed, I think WordPerfect would have the minimum capability I need to use it during my business day. Until then, I must continue to endure NT. In it's favor, it has the glibc thing down pat. It compiles nicely. What I didn't like: 1. When you try to build a kernel, you get forced into selecting OSSFREE. 2. If you try to take the standard linux kernel tarball, which is distributed, Redhat's configuration scripts report alot of errors about "unresolved module dependencies". 3. It isn't as configurable as Suse, as far as package installation goes. For instance, most things work if you select "install everything". But if you try to make a chopped down install, you don't get the ppp module properly installed unless you choose "install as dialout workstation". But there is no way to know that except thru trial and error. 4.
