[opensuse-support] yesterday's update changed xterm font size
did an update yesterday and rec'd new kernel, kernel-default-4.17.14-1.2.x86_64, and about 300 other packages. rebooted for new kernel and now opening xterm provides a large font (unwanted). <ctrl><rt-click> on <medium> provides original font. what changed that may have caused this? If needed I can provide a list of the updated packages. tks -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

I haven't yet noticed, maybe because I have ~/.Xresources containing: xterm*faceName: Droid Sans Mono:antialias=true xterm*faceSize: 11 xterm*vt100.geometry: 120x43 -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Yes, I am seeing that. I'm not sure what package changed. ---- .Xresources ----- xterm*font:6x13 ---- That reverts to the previous font. yes, that works. tks now hope someone can advise (and revert) whatever initiated the change. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

I seriously doubt change was unintended or that there is any likelihood of "reversion". The old configuration dates back decades, to when *nix DPI was 75, and screens with density much above that were rare. The old default on a screen of even modest density by today's standards is extraordinarily tiny[1], entirely illegible to any but those with the most extraordinary vision on a Retina-class or higher display. well, sitting in front of a 28" screen, the "new" font size is quite huge and while I have had to wear corrective lenses since I was two years old, the previous "normal" was sufficient for me, even on the 55" tv 10 feet away. I would not desire any smaller though except on a lap top with a 15" display. tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

You are probably right. I have always preferred "xterm" over other terminal emulators, precisely because it has that nice small text size. So I guess I'll have to keep that ".Xresources" file around. Just about anybody else who sees my screen says that everything is far too small, and looks like ants crawling over the screen. But I like it this way. I guess my eyes are adapted to small print. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

yes, for apps normally kept open. but for quick-and-dirty, xterm from a keyboard shortcut always. maybe just ingrained in ancient memory :) -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

I use that, too. "xterm" and "yakuake" are useful in different circumstances. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

another system where above failed, but solved: same ~/.Xresources xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources success -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

If needed I can provide a list of the updated packages.
This change was coming from .... xterm... tks, I guess a possibly a warning and path to return would have been warranted but that boat has sailed. unexpected changes are always disconcerting, maybe something is going wrong with system... tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
