Sorry, I can't dare try. If it is true that gmail does not offer this facility currently and I can not set it up again, I'm stuck.
Yes, it was possible to add other e-mail without smtp in the past. If you did so, they remain. However, it's no longer possible to add new ones. It was described in some of the articles.
I just successfully added test e-mail alias using smtp.gmail.com as SMTP server. I verified that I can send mail via Web interface on behalf of this address.

This basically confirms what Knurpht said earlier - gmail allows sending with arbitrary identity as long as you authenticate yourself as google user (and I believe connection must be encrypted).
It is possible that this requires some specific settings. In particular, using two factor authentication it probably won't work as described and one need to generate application password for this. I do not have experience.
... hmm ... quick search gives this
Thanks Andrei for the hint. Finally! I am able to add the o.o alias without any issues. The catch here is, WE MUST generate and set the so called 'APP PASSWORD' > and to do this, we need to enable 2 factor auth. Hereby mentioning the steps if some1 tries to search in future for this issue = Step 1) Login to your GMAIL against which you received the o.o alias. Step 2) Refer to https://support.google.com/domains/answer/9437157?hl=en and set 2 factor authentication. Step 3) Only after setting 2F you'll see an option to create/set APP PASSWORD. Step 4) Copy the auto generated app password. Step 5) Go to GMAIL Setting > Add Accounts > Add your o.o alias > don't touch gmail's SMTP server name > change port to 25 [does not work with the default port] > Put the APP PASSWORD > Done! Step 6) Now compose a new e-mail and you'll see emails in the drop down menu. I am able to SEND emails from my opensuse alias now. Regards, Amey.
