Not sure what's going on then. Did you check if your user is allowed to use sudo? If /etc/sudoers is not configured to allow unprivileged users to use sudo, you'll get an error.
When you try, for example, sudo cat /var/log/mail, do you get prompted for the root password? Does it complete successfully?
