We rarely get the answer posted here as to what fixed the problem so I am going to say how and why.

I replaced 3 computers that were connected to a HDMI KVM switch with newer computers that only have Display Ports. The nvme drives were swapped and the network came up fine but on a DHCP address that I could ssh into and correct the ip address.

I had some old Display Port to HDMI adapters from my previous job - 4 old ones and 4 still in the package.

It turned out that some of the old ones did not pass the EDID data to OpenSUSE so the i915 driver saw no monitor.

One of the adapters did and by luck was attached to my Tumbleweed machine and it did the EDID.

The second Tumbleweed did not have a display and I checked every BIOS option and they were identical on both machines.

While updating the bugzilla - it dawned on me to swap the video cables on the two boxes and the video stayed with the cable.

I opened 2 new DP to HDMI adapters that I bought last month and - voila - video on all computers.
