Invalidating Firefox' DNS cache was one of the first things that I tried.
Unfortunately it didn't work: this is one of the things that makes me think there must be something really weird going on, but I cannot really imagine what it could be.
Given the timespan of the problem (I'm still having the problem in Firefox and, in a lesser fashion, in Falkon) I'm led to believe it is due to an external source (my internet provider DNS resolver), but if it was so, then how is it possible that e.g. wget does not have the problem?
I'm really out of ideas.
