Yes, it was possible to add other e-mail without smtp in the past. If
you did so, they remain. However, it's no longer possible to add new
ones. It was described in some of the articles.
I just successfully added test e-mail alias using smtp.gmail.com as SMTP
server. I verified that I can send mail via Web interface on behalf of
this address.

I used smtp.gmail.com, port 465, use SSL, my gmail e-mail as user (and
of course my password). This basically confirms what Knurpht said
earlier - gmail allows sending with arbitrary identity as long as you
authenticate yourself as google user (and I believe connection must be
encrypted).
It is possible that this requires some specific settings. In particular,
using two factor authentication it probably won't work as described and
one need to generate application password for this. I do not have
experience.
