That doesn't help if the file you're searching is not a command but whatever else... I agree with Sourian - locate is a very useful tool, and not big, so it should be installed by default, to my opinion. Some people might be unhappy with updatedb running every night at 12:15 and making noise with disks, but it's easy to configure and/or disable if needed...
