Note that these are CRT monitors. It switches to correct mode, thus is not out of range, I can verify that via the OSD menu. I can even switch it to different modes using xrandr, but it stays black. It is not a hardware issue, dual monitors work okay in the other operating system. The theory is that CRTC1 is not properly initialized or operated. This is backed up by the fact that when the first (ie. working) monitor is plugged out before starting X, the other monitor (ie. blank) is working, and when the former first monitor is plugged back and activated via xrandr, it stays black. I experienced a brief moment a working setup, which went as follows: the X server was first configured to run with the radeon driver, then it was shut down, then the radeonhd driver was configured. This setup resulted in both monitors working. Whenever there is enough movement in the screen the screen flickers, white lines, random garbage, and various displacements going on quite often. Best example is a website which triggers the most sever problems with flash animations: http://www.foreca.fi/Suomi/tasmasaa/Helsinki Depending on what flash animations is running there the screen is either flickering a little bit a quite a lot. This site reproduces the problem every time. (The site shows local weather in Helsinki area) It can also be reproduced by for example giving dmesg;dmesg in gnome-terminal and then constantly doing Page Up and Page Down (with xset r rate 200 to get away the keyboard delay) and the screen will flicker. With this I can also reproduce the problem every time. Attached xorg.conf and X logs. No other program is able to use DRI. I added "Group 0666" to my DRI section in xorg.conf. When the user switches to another session by fast user switching or any other means, DRM and EXA are not available so rendering is unnacelerated and very slow. As you can see from the xrandr output below, something is adding a 1400x1050 mode to the 1280x1024 LCD. I am able to use xrandr to change the resolution to 1280x1024. Before adding in the GeForce 8400GS, everything was fine.... and now there are vertical stripes. The xf86-video-ati driver does not exhibit this corruption. The display attached to the GeForce shows no corruption. I am attaching my xorg.conf (pardon the mess) and the log file. When I use fglrx in Xorg my laptop only consumes 15-16W, but fglrx is so unstable that it crashes on logout, and I despise using it. When I use the OPENSUSE 11.1 radeonhd driver, I have much improved stability (although no acceleration), but power usage also jumps to 35W! I have tried xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd-1.2.4_121202_4e89726-1.5 and even the latest xf86-video-radeonhd git version but they all behave the same. Interestingly, when I'm not in X I also have high power usage, whether or not fglrx or radeon modules are loaded or not. I suppose the graphics card is not running in low power modes without fglrx. The only way I can get low power usage is through using fglrx in an Xorg session... I have even tried the radeontool tip mentioned here - http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6522 - but it made no difference. When playing video both displays remain normal for 20-30 seconds before the right screen goes black. It remains black for 1-5 seconds before returning to normal. This is often followed by a succession of black screen events that are 1-10 seconds apart. This is followed by another 20-30 seconds of normality before the problem repeats. When the video is paused the black screens cease. When the video is unpaused they return. It doesn't matter which display the video window is on: left, right, or straddling both. The following players trigger the bug: mplayer, xine, totem I'm currently unable to try VLC.
