When I use fglrx in Xorg my laptop only consumes 15-16W, but fglrx is so unstable that it crashes on logout, and I despise using it. When I use the OPENSUSE 11.1 radeonhd driver, I have much improved stability (although no acceleration), but power usage also jumps to 35W! I have tried xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd-1.2.4_121202_4e89726-1.5 and even the latest xf86-video-radeonhd git version but they all behave the same. Interestingly, when I'm not in X I also have high power usage, whether or not fglrx or radeon modules are loaded or not. I suppose the graphics card is not running in low power modes without fglrx. The only way I can get low power usage is through using fglrx in an Xorg session... I have even tried the radeontool tip mentioned here - http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6522 - but it made no difference. When playing video both displays remain normal for 20-30 seconds before the right screen goes black. It remains black for 1-5 seconds before returning to normal. This is often followed by a succession of black screen events that are 1-10 seconds apart. This is followed by another 20-30 seconds of normality before the problem repeats. When the video is paused the black screens cease. When the video is unpaused they return. It doesn't matter which display the video window is on: left, right, or straddling both. The following players trigger the bug: mplayer, xine, totem I'm currently unable to try VLC. Here is some more information from that user: "Ok, the attached xorg.conf and log are as requested. I have also included lspci -vvv for the video card. The card itself is a HIS HD 4350 (see www.hisdigital.com) 64bit card with onboard fan. These files were generated using radeonhd, trying to connect over DVI to an ASUS MK241H lcd monitor, which has a native resolution of 1920x1200. Please let me know if you need any more information" We tried setting HDP options ("off" and "swap"), but this didn't help. Attached are xorg.conf and the according log (with logverbose 7) and an lspci output for the graphics card. If you need any further information feel free to ask. By the way: The radeon driver works fine, but flickers. Should the severity be "blocker"? This only seems to happen when I have a dark window (eg. a terminal) with bright areas (eg. a blue desktop background) visible on the left side of the window (the right side doesn't matter). The bigger the visible non-dark area is, the more distortions I get. As mentioned above, this only happens on one of my screens (DVI-I_1/digital), the other one (DVI-I_2/digital) works perfectly. I also power-cycled the machine to make sure there are no fglrx leftovers. NB: This effect is not seen when running the alternative radeon (ati) driver. But when I connect my monitor with DVI all I get is a blank black screen. The monitor indicates if there isn't a signal but in this case it doensn't indicate that so it seems to be getting a signal but one which is just blank hopefully this is an easy fix!
