[opensuse-project] Feature/Goal tracking using FATE for openSUSE
So this was discussed during the Status Meeting and now it's here for a broader discussion. :) It was suggested that a feature/goal tracking tool (FATE) be adopted by openSUSE and made public (bug .223290). There are a few reasons for this: * This is one of the cases of the wiki being misused for such a thing, when it's not ideal. Several projects currently use the wiki for goal tracking. While it's absolutely awesome thath this stuff is public so that many of us can take a look through, it may not be ideal. Some examples: Zypp, YaST, KIWI http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/KIWI/Todo, UX, Build Service etc. * Things are more open to the community; openSUSE does use FATE currently, but it's Novell's one only open to employees. Current cons are that it would really take quite some time/effort to put up. So, the question is: would people in other projects find it useful (instead of having to use the wiki) to have this, and do you think it is a good idea? The most prominent - and problematic - example are the wishlists. It's nearly impossible to maintain them in wiki tables IMHO.

That's the problem. I don't really mind if the feature tracking is done in FATE, bugzilla or another tool. That's just a technical question. The thing I'm interested in is that it should be open to the community *and* easy to use. Continuing the package wishlist in the wiki does not fulfill the second criteria ;-) For the package wishlist, I'd like to have the "package wishlist" product in bugzilla back if you don't have a better solution (like FATE) ready in the next weeks.

Yes, however I think it would be worth the time and effort. IIRC there's already a "partner.FATE" web interface which supports permissions etc. So as a first step you could define a partner (aka permission flag) "openSUSE community" and create FATE accounts on request. This shouldn't be too much work and would show how much interest exists. Using the Novell account for login would be nice, but isn't a real requirement for the first step.
